An Uncivil War
( Part Two Of The Ítreksjóð Trilogy )
An Unlikely Ally
Suddenly, he heard a a twig snap uncomfortably close to him !
" Haur,... is that you ! ? " Dolgthvari whispered in the direction of the sound.
Dolgthvari suffered through a long silence. Just as he was about to call out again, a voice called back.
" Yes, it is me,.... Haur ! "
Haur slowly worked his way around some brush, and into the open area by the tree.
" Could you have chosen a worse place to meet ?! " Haur asked.
Dolgthvari could not hide the look of fear on his face as he answered.
" I picked this spot because our comrades do not like to venture into this part of the Lovarr's valley. " he explained nervously.
Haur narrowed his eyes angrily.
" Yes ! And I can see why ! My feet are wet from crossing streams, my shoes are muddy, and my arms and legs are scratched and bleeding from all the thick thorny bushes I had to walk through to get here ! " he told his old friend as he showed him the many scratches on his arms.
" See ! No Rock Dwarf in his right mind would come here to bother us ! " he replied happily.
Haur shook his head.
" I need some new friends ! " he said more to himself than to Dolgthvari.
Then he quickly added :
" Have the others agreed to oppose Fjalar and Galar ? " he asked.
Dolgthvari's smile turned into a grin.
" Yes ! Hugstari, Hledjolf, Dori, Duf, and Har are all with us ! " he confirmed.
" Good ! And I have received assurances from Motsognir's descendants who live down here in Svarin's grave mound. Skirvir, Virvir, Skafid, Ai, Alf, Igni, Eikinskjaldi, and others will join us to oppose our leaders and free Motsognir and Ivaldi. " he informed his friend.
Dolgthvari frowned in disbelief.
" The Lovarr have agreed to help us ! ? " he asked.
" Yes ! Those who live here in Aurvangar, or " The Wetlands " as it is known to some, are as appalled as we Rock Dwarves that our leaders have kidnapped the Earth Dwarve Elders and are holding them for ransom. They say that they will not stand for such dishonorable actions between Dwarves. " he told Dolgthvari.
Dolgthvari took a deep breath before telling his friend something that had burdened him since all of this began.
" Haur,... if this was anyone but Motsognir I would not have had as many reservations about the kidnapping. But we both know that Fjalar and Galar are not the most stable of Dwarves. I mean,... they killed the God Kvasir, the Giant Gilling, and his wife ! It is possible that in a fit of rage they could kill our eldest ancestor,.... and we cannot let that happen ! " he exclaimed angrily.
Haur patted his friend on the shoulder and smiled.
" And together we will not allow this to happen ! " he assured his friend.
Dolgthvari forced himself to smile as well.
" When will we free Motsognir ? " he asked nervously.
" Tomorrow night there are to be no moons, and in the darkness we will free the Wise One, and make sure that he gets back to his home safely. " Haur explained.
Dolgthvari had one more question for his friend before he left the valley.
" What will we do if the Earth Dwarves decide to pursue a war even after Motsognir's return ? " he asked.
Haur took a long deep breath.
" Then, my old friend, we will have to fight ! " he said sadly.
