An Uncivil War
( Part Two Of The Ítreksjóð Trilogy )
The War That Wasn't
" Well ! While the Rock Dwarves are having their little civil war, I believe we will pay them a visit and show them just how uncivil we can be ! " Durinn screamed.
" An " uncivil war " ! I like the sound of that ! " he replied with a chuckle despite the serious nature of the statement.
Durinn turned and yelled for his guard !
" Get the warriors ready, Nidi ! " he ordered.
Nidi grinned from ear to ear as he replied :
" Yes, my Lord ! It will be my pleasure ! "
Before leaving the limestone hall Nidi turned to Durinn and nodded happily.
" It is high time that we put these Rock Dwellers in their place ! " he added.
Durinn looked back at Ivaldi and shook his head.
" Everyone is always eager for war ! That is until it is over of course, and you have to deal with all of the regrets. " Durinn told the elder Dwarf sadly.
" You sound more and more like your father every day ! " he told Durinn.
Dolgthvari, Haur, Fjalar, and Galar stayed in the Great Arch Hall while everyone else was sent away. With over half of the Rock Dwarves siding with the rebels, the co - rulers had no choice but to listen to their demands.
Dolgthvari spoke first :
" Never again will you two, or anyone for that matter, threaten Motsognir ! He is our elder, our ancestor, and our keeper of knowledge and wisdom ! He is sacred to us, and shall be treated with the respect and honor that he so rightfully deserves !" he told the co - rulers in a threatening manner.
Fjalar and Galar glanced at one another and nodded in agreement.
" Yes ! It does seem that we have miscalculated the reaction of our Dwarve comrades." Fjalar replied dejectedly.
" We should have only kidnapped Ivaldi ! " Galar added.
" But the Earth Dwarves would not have paid nearly as much for him as for Motsognir ! " Fjalar reminded his brother.
" SILENCE !!! " Dolgthvari screamed.
" Do you two idiots not realize that we have bigger problems than that now ? ! " Dolgthvari asked.
Galar raised his eyebrows and shrugged his shoulders.
" And what would they be ? " he asked in return.
Haur shook his head out of sheer disgust and disbelief.
" By now the Rock Dwarves have gathered their forces, and as we speak, they are more than likely marching here to attack us ! " he told the co - rulers angrily.
Fjalar and Galar looked at one another.
" Well,.... then we must mobilize our forces at once ! " Fjalar stated emphatically.
" Yes, yes,... as quickly as possible ! " Galar added.
Durinn was shocked that the Rock Dwarves had allowed his army to get this close to their kingdom. As the leader of the Earth Dwarves moved to stand beside Ivaldi he pointed to the Great Arch Hall in the distance.
" Have they decided to stay and fight within their rock fortress ? " he asked.
Before Ivaldi could answer, Durinn added :
" I have not prepared for a long siege ! "
The point became mute moments later when Ivaldi was the first to see the Rock Dwarves streaming out of their mountain fortress.
" Here they come,....and they are dressed for war ! " he told Durinn.
Durinn scanned the horizon and then pointed off to the northeast.
" Do you see that flat shelf next to that little cliff ? " he asked.
Ivaldi followed his finger.
" Yes ! Off to the right a little. " he replied.
" That is where the battle will take place ! " he informed Ivaldi the Elder.
As the Rock Dwarves climbed down onto the far side of the plateau the Earth Dwarves were already scrambling up the other side. When all had been assembled on the relatively flat plain both sides stared each other down for a few moments before a roar rose up from both armies. Then, as though they were shot out of a catapult, the two armies came running at each other as fast as their little legs could carry them.
Three hundred yards, two hundred yards, one hundred, the distance decreased so fast that neither side had a chance to adjust their lines as they went. At fifty yards warriors on both sides began to pick out their opponents, and at twenty five they had their weapons ready to strike. Every warrior was focused ! Every warrior was ready to die !!
The flames started form the north and ran south in between the two opposing armies. Dwarves on both sides stopped so short that almost all of them fell. As they sat on their asses they watched as a huge shadow fell over them. Slowly they raised their eyes up to see what had blocked out the sun. What they saw that day was emblazoned upon their memories for the rest of their lives !
Motsognir sat on Ítreksjóð's neck whooping and hollering like a little child, as the great dragon separated the two armies with a great swath of flames.
" Keep them apart, but please don't hurt anyone ! " Motsognir reminded the great dragon.
Ítreksjóð roared out his approval as he slowly circled above. Motsognir listened closely, but could not hear any activity below.
" Have they stopped ? " Mortsognir asked.
Ítreksjóð roared again.
" Good ! Then please land in between the two armies. " he told the great Dragon God.
With a great flap of it's wings Ítreksjóð landed in the center of the two forces, where Dolgthvari, Haur, Fjalar, Galar, Ivaldi, and Durinn stood directly across from one another.
" I am sorry, but there will be no war here today my children . " Motsognir stated matter of factly.
" Durinn send your army home ! Dolgthvari and Haur send the Rock Dwarves away as well ! " Motsognir instructed.
Fjalar pointed his sword at Motsognir, a silly gesture, because he was blind and could not see the threat.
" My brother and I rule the Rock Dwarves ! " he yelled at the Wise One.
Galar then added :
" And we have an army old man ! "
" No ! Dolgthvari and Haur now rule the Rock Dwarves,... and I have a fire breathing dragon God named Ítreksjóð. " he explained calmly.
Ítreksjóð turned and let out a stream of flames that passed just over the heads of the Rock Dwarves making them bow to the ground. When the flames stopped Fjalar and Galar put their weapons away and spoke no more.
Motsognir gently tapped Ítreksjóð's head, and the great dragon lowered it's head to the ground . Motsognir carefully slid off of the side of the dragon, stumbling slightly as he hit the ground. When he righted himself he brushed off his clothes, and stated calmly, but boldly.
" Durinn, Ivaldi, Dolgthvari, and Haur,... you, my descendants, will come with me back to my chamber, and there we will discuss the longstanding grievances between the Rock Dwarves and Earth Dwarves,... and find solutions. " he explained to them.
Then he added :
" Ítreksjóð will you guide me please ? "
The great dragon glowed like a furnace for a moment, and then it slowly transformed into a God - like form. Ítreksjóð took hold of Motsognir's arm and began to lead him back to the Earth Dwarves domain. The leaders from both sides stood still for a moment shocked by what they had just witnessed.
" Come, come ! Do not be afraid ! Odin's son is our friend ! " he assured them.
