A Call For Help
From each leaf, on every tree surrounding the village of Borre, Jord witnessed the horrific events that played out below. As Sunna waved goodbye, and Mani took his place in the night sky, Jord's tears fell from the leaves in the form of dew. The World Goddess had never seen such carnage outside of a pitched battle between armies, and the sight of dead mothers still clutching their infants in death , sickened Jord........ and angered her as well !
Jord opened her mind and searched the entire world of Midgard. Through every flower, vine, and blade of grass, she sought out her son. The Goddess was beginning to despair that Thor was not in Midgard, when from an acorn hanging on an oak tree in Southern Finland she spotted her son sleeping up against the trunk below.
Without wind or storm the lowest branch on the oak tree slowly bent down and gently brushed its leaves up against Thor's cheek. The God of Thunder pushed the leaves away, and then tried to return to his sleep. Moments later Thor felt the leaves caress his cheek again.
" Mother ! " Thor shouted drowsily.
With an annoyed expression on his face the Thunder God looked up at the branch that hovered above him.
" I have been in the east fighting trolls ! And I am trying to get some much needed rest ! " Thor told his mother in a cranky tone.
Behind Thor the tree slowly transformed into the image of a Goddess. Jord placed her arms around her son, and gave him a hug and a kiss on the forehead.
" Awaken my son ! For there is trouble here in Midgard ! " she told Thor with a scolding look.
When the Thunder God heard the words "trouble", and "Midgard", in the same sentence the fog of sleep dissipated and he jumped up. Thor quickly turned, and gently grabbed hold of his mother's arms.
" What trouble vexes your lands now mother ?! " he asked excitedly.
" I see the prospect of battle has once again energized you my son ! " she exclaimed as she looked deeply into his flaming red eyes.
Thor's eyes narrowed with determination.
" I am ready mother ! Tell me what has happened ? ! " he demanded.
Jord described to Thor in great detail how the Jotuns surrounded the village of Borre and then systematically destroyed it house by house, and human by human. She told her son how no one was spared, from the oldest man to the youngest child. To emphasize the horrific acts she explained to Thor of the mother, with a child at her chest who begged for their lives, and how the heartless Jotun struck them both down with his terrible hone.
" ...... And so my son, I need you to go and stop these Jotuns before their reign of terror wipes out countless more of your father's children, and possibly destroys my precious land ! " she ordered her son.
Thor stroked his beard with his massive hand. The Jotuns seldom stayed in Midgard, preferring a hit and run strategy of attacks on the humans. Usually they would destroy a village, and then quickly take their spoils back to Jotunheim. It was there, in the land of the Giants, that Thor would almost always exact his revenge against the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. But these Jotuns.....well.....apparently they didn't scare quite as easily.
" Where do you think they will strike next mother ? " Thor asked.
Jord knelt down and with a mere thought turned her finger into a stick. Using her, ' stick finger ', she drew a crude map of Southern Norway in the dirt.
" They struck here at Borre first." she began. " When I left them the Jotuns were heading south, and I am certain that they intend to hit Oseberg next, and then Tunsberg, Gokestad, and Kaupang, as they move down to the sea. I believe if you hurry that you can challenge them in Oseberg. " she explained as she pointed to the ' X ' that marked Oseberg on her crude map.
Thor nodded, then bent down and picked up his knapsack.
" Then I will leave at once for Oseberg ! " he told his mother.
Thor's long powerful strides were many times the length of those of a human. What would have taken a Midgardian a week to travel, the God of Thunder needed only one day to traverse. Thor was not alone in his journey to Oseberg. Jord followed her son's progress through every tree, flower, and blade of grass along the way.
Thor and Jord were bitterly disappointed when they arrived at Oseberg. The village was totally destroyed, and everywhere they looked broken bodies littered the ground. Thor took it all in with a very heavy heart, and then told his mother that they were too late. The Jotuns had obviously moved on .
As Thor sifted through the debris for clues to the identity of these Jotuns he became angrier and angrier. It was he, Thor Odinson, who was responsible for the safety of Midgard, and not once, but twice now he had failed to stop the Jotuns before they struck. When his fury reached its peak Thor lifted Mjolnir up towards the heavens and let his rage out in the form of lightning and booming thunder. Amidst all this noise and turmoil, Thor was distracted and did not see, or sense, the eyes that watched him !
