Turning The Tables On The Jotuns !
" The camp has been made to seem occupied, and yet if you look closely there is no one to be found. " he explained to Thor.
Thor gave the camp a quick once - over and then nodded.
" Agreed ! " he whispered back to Aurvandil.
" Now, follow my finger as I point to that large crooked pine tree off to the left on the side of the hill. Watch it closely, and you will see movement in the shadows beneath it. " he told Thor.
Thor looked beneath the large tree, but at first he did not see anything move. Then, as his eyes adjusted to the dim light, he caught the shadow of a Jotun moving near its trunk.
" Yes ! I see the Jotun hiding there. " Thor replied.
Aurvandil switched positions and pointed directly across the camp.
" Across the valley, on the opposing hill, you will see a flat rock with a boulder on top. Behind it waits another Jotun ready to kill you. " he pointed out.
The rock in question was in the sunlight making it much easier for Thor to distinguish the Jotun's shadow.
" Yes ! " I see him as well ! " Thor exclaimed quietly.
Aurvandil then pointed down towards the camp and waggled his finger from side to side.
" Two more Jotuns are just outside of the camp, and directly below us on the right and the left. You cannot see them from here, but you must trust me that they are there. " the Jotun explained.
Thor nodded thoughtfully.
Aurvandil then looked Thor in the eyes, and said sternly.
" There is one more Jotun, but unfortunately I have lost his position ! " he warned Thor.
Thor looked back down at the still raging fire.
"So it was their intention to draw me into their false camp, and while I was demolishing it they would catch me by surprise and attack me from all sides in an attempt to kill me ! " Thor summarized angrily.
Aurvandil took a long breath, and then exhaled.
" That would appear to be their plan Thunder God. " he agreed.
Thor stroked his red beard.
" I will attack the two below me first and then go after the distant Jotuns. " Thor said more to himself than to Aurvandil.
Aurvandil placed his hand on Thor's shoulder.
" Do I have your word that you will leave after you have killed Hrimgrimnir and his warriors for destroying the Midgardian towns and killing the humans there ? " he asked nervously of Thor.
Thor pulled out his hammer and placed it in front of the Jotun's face. Aurvandil was terrrified !
" Place your hand upon my hammer ! " Thor commanded.
Aurvandil, realizing he had little choice did as he was told. Thor then placed his hand on the opposite side of Mjolnir.
" I swear that if the help you have given me here aides me in killing those who attacked Midgard, then I will leave Jotunheim and not seek further revenge ! That is my promise ! That is my oath ! That is my word ! " Thor told the Jotun in a hoarse whisper.
" I accept your pledge. Now follow me quietly and I will show you the way to the Jotun's who wait below us ! " the Jotun said in a calmer voice.
Grimling was tired . The Jotun had been watching the camp for most of the day, and was bored, and becoming drowsy. Other than the crackling of the fire below the Jotun forest was completely still. Then, from far off in the distance, he heard a low whistling sound like wind rushing by. Grimling quickly turned to see where it was coming from. He caught only a glimpse of the object before it impacted his head and crushed his skull.
Hruga heard a loud grunt, and looked over in the general direction of where Grimling had positioned himself for the attack. What he saw horrified the Jotun. Aurvandil was standing next to the God Thor, who was holding his hammer high over his head. When Hruga spotted the blood dripping off of the head of the hammer he took to his heels and began to flee as fast as possible. As the terrified Jotun tried to place as much distance between himself and the angry God of Thunder he began to scream in a high pitched shout.
" Thor ! Thor is here !! ' he screamed as loud as he could.
Thor threw his hammer with all his might at Hruga. Mjolnir flew straight and true towards its target. For any other weapon the mountain forest would have been impenetrable, and its flight stopped by the many trees and small boulders. But living wood, and solid rock were no match for the might that was instilled in Mjolnir by the Dwarves all those years ago.
Hruga heard the trees splintering behind him, but this time he was too afraid to turn and see what was happening behind him. As the sounds of cracking trees and exploding boulders came closer and closer, the Jotun began to scream like a wild animal. It was the last sound that he ever made !
Hringvolnir and Oskrud spotted Thor from their hidden positions among the rocks, and immediately began to move forward to attack their longtime enemy. The moment they rose up from their concealed positions Thor, with the eyes of a practiced hunter, lined them both up in his sights. The Thunder God turned to Aurvandil and grinned.
" You will wait here my friend, while I take care of these two ! " Thor commanded.
Hrimgrimnir, who was furthest away, and had not been discovered, could not believe his eyes when he saw Aurvandil standing with the hated Thunder God !
" You bastard ! I am going to kill you for betraying us !! " Hrimgrimnir yelled out loud.
Thor did not attempt to hide or shield himself from the feeble attack of the Jotun who reached him first. With his hammer held high he repulsed every blow as though he were swatting away flies. He laughed heartily and returned each blow with a fierce counter strike of his own. Hringvolnir fought with great determination, and much skill, but if he had known that the God was only playing with the him he would have run for his life. When Thor tired of the game he smashed Hringvolnir's hone weapon with a single massive blow. The Jotun was so angered that he attacked Thor with his bare hands. The Thunder God accepted the challenge ! He grabbed hold of the Jotun's arm and twisted it hard forcing the Jotun to spin around involuntarily. Thor then lifted his arm until it broke at the elbow.
Hringvolnir spasmed from the intense pain and fell to the ground on his knees. He tried to reach around with his good arm, but the pain in his broken arm became so intense he almost blacked out. He was convinced of his fate until he spotted someone coming quickly towards him through the forest. He grinned as he thought to himself that his death would not be in vain.
Thor saw Hringvolnir's head look off to the right, and followed the Jotun' s stare with his predator eyes. What he saw made his eyes glow bright red and sparks fly from his beard. Another Jotun was coming straight for him with his sword ready for the attack.
The God of Thunder did not panic, nor did he flinch. He focused his eyes upon his prey, and raised Mjolnir high over his head. The heavens lit up with the great power of an angry God, and the forest crackled with electricity, as the concentrated power of the cosmos reflected out of his hammer in an explosion of light and energy.
Hringvolnir watched in his agony as a bolt of lightning, the likes of which he had never seen, reached out like the fist of a great beast, and punched a hole through the chest of Oskrud, who was attempting to come to his aid. Hringvolnir grimaced as he watched his old friend's dead body being thrown up against a boulder like a rag by the blast, and he winced when he heard the Jotun's bones shatter from the impact.
Then Hringvolnir began to laugh, a demented twisted laugh. His tortured mind was racked with pain, and he had witnessed the frightful death of his friend. His sanity left him just before Thor's hammer ended his life.
Thor grinned from ear to ear as he stood above the dead Jotun whose head he had crushed with a single blow of his mighty hammer.
" You will harm no more Midgardians my ugly enemy ! " Thor told the bloody corpse that lay on the ground below him.
As Thor hovered over the Jotun's body he suddenly heard shouting off in the distance.
" Aurvandil ! " Thor whispered to himself .
