Fugitive From Hel
Serkr still had the knife stuck in his belt that Loki had given him in Hel's hall. Slowly he pulled out the weapon as he carefully watched the glowing light coming closer and closer. The knife felt good in Serkr's hand. It gave him a sense of security, and a feeling of power. As the light continued to grow in size he felt the evil begin to rise up in him again.
With his adrenaline up, the weariness his mind had succumbed to only moments before faded like mist before the rising sun. Serkr decided to go around, and come up on the light source from behind it. As he worked himself ever closer to the glowing mass, through thick weeds, he began to hear a buzzing sound coming from the radiating light. When he felt he was close enough to attack Serkr jumped up from the brush, and was about to rush at it, when he saw that within the glow was a large being ...... and it was naked !
Serkr's eyes nearly popped out of his head when the creature turned and looked directly at him. The large being that stared him in the eyes had bright yellow hair that stood straight up in the air, and it..... it ....seemed to sparkle with a strange crackling sound ! He was so fascinated by the strangeness of this being's hair that he failed to notice that it had pointed its finger at him. Suddenly a bright flash of light pulsated out of the being's finger, followed by a loud crack. Serkr felt the knife being blown out of his hand as he was thrown back by the creature's powerful light.
It took Serkr a moment to recover from the shock of the attack. When he regained his vision, and his nerve, he looked up to see the glowing being hovering above him. Serkr wanted to flee ! He scrambled backward using his hands and feet until he hit a rock, and could go no more. When he realized that there was no escape he looked up at the creature with fear in his eyes.
What are you ?! " he shouted at the creature.
The creature placed his hands on his hips and chuckled. To Serkr its laughter had a strange sound to it...... it almost sounded like the crackling noise that lightning made when it struck nearby !
" My name is Byleistr ! My brother Loki let it be known to me that you were coming. He has asked me to show you the way out of Niflheim. " he told the human corpse with a broad smile.
Serkr shook his head from sided to side to clear his head.
" Why do you glow like a candle ? " he asked.
Byleistr grinned and placed his hands over his head as though he were holding something there.
" Spinning worlds produce magnetism, and in the static charge that it produces there is a type of energy similar to your lightning, that I have learned to harness. " he explained to Serkr.
Suddenly a blue arc of light flashed between the Jotun's hands. It crackled like a fire log as it danced back and forth. Serkr could not only see the creatures great power, but he could feel it as well. Every hair on his head and arms was standing on end as if someone, or something, was pulling on them ! Although Serkr did not understand what this strange being's power was he knew it was dangerous, and that this being was not one to be trifled with .
" You don' t have to understand what fire is to know that it can harm you ! " Serkr thought to himself.
Byleistr slowly reached out his hand to Serkr.
" Give me your hand. " Byleistr told him.
Serkr at first resisted, but after a moment he realized that if this Jotun truly wanted to destroy him he would not have to ask for his hand to do so. Besides, Loki had a reason to keep him alive, and would not have sent his brother to obliterate him. As Serkr reached out his right hand to Loki's brother he used his left hand to shade his new eyes from the blinding light that seemed to burst out of Byleistr's every pour. When their hands met Serkr could feel a sensation coursing through his fingers that felt like a thousand tiny needles trying to puncture his skin. Then, suddenly his whole body tingled with this same feeling. It was then Serkr noticed that Byleistr's feet were not touching the ground ! If this wasn't shocking enough he then realized that his feet were no longer on the ground either !!
Before they floated away Byleistr reached out with his free hand, and a streak of light shone out of his palm onto the knife where it had fallen in the weeds. In the blink of an eye the knife flew through the air into the Jotun's hand.
" Here! You will need this in Midgard ! " he told Serkr as he handed the knife back to the human.
As Serkr took the knife and placed it back in his belt he suddenly had the sense that he was moving. The usually fearless Serkr screamed as he looked around and saw the world going past him at an incredible speed. His mind could not take any more of this ! Serkr held on tightly to the Jotun's hand, and closed his eyes. He had seen so many horrific things in Nastrond, but this, ..... this was just too weird for him to wrap his feeble mind around !
Serkr did not open his eyes until he sensed that they had stopped. What he saw before him was not the spectacular thing he thought he would see. Frankly he did not know what to expect when he opened his eyes, but this was a rather dull ending to their spectacular little flight. There before Serkr was the dark entrance to a cave. Serkr frowned, turned, and then shrugged his shoulders at Byleistr.
Byleistr saw that the man was perplexed, and laughed.
" Every world has a different exit and entrance. The way from Niflheim to Midgard is through this cave. It is not merely a hole in the structure of a world. It is a porthole between time and space. This tunnel will bring you back to where you departed Midgard. After you emerge on the other side the entrance here in Niflheim will close. It will then wait for the next traveler who wishes to leave Niflheim, or in rare cases for someone who wishes to travel to Niflheim. " he explained to Serkr.
Serkr frowned again.
" So this cave will bring me back to the exact place in Midgard where I left ? " he asked.
Byleistr shook his head in disgust.
" Yes ! That is exactly what I said human ! " he replied with a hint of anger.
" Then I will be on my way ! " he told the shining Jotun as he entered the cave.
Byleistr shook his head again.
" What ungrateful creatures these humans are ! " he whispered to himself.
Then there was a flash of light and Byleistr was gone.
