Fugitive From Hel
Skadhi tied Serkr's hands and feet together and then handed Thor the end of the rope. The God of Thunder began to walk away pulling the human corpse along the ground as he went.
" Are you not forgetting something ? " Skadhi asked Thor as he walked away.
Thor stopped for a moment, stroked his beard in deep thought, and then shrugged his shoulders.
" I do not believe that I have forgotten anything Mountain Goddess. I have gotten what I came for ! " he told her with a smile as he pulled on the rope.
Skadhi put her hands on her hips and shook her head in disappointment.
" Then I will go to the woods and tell the humans that they can return to their home ! " Skadhi told Thor with a scolding look.
Thor diverted his eyes for a moment before answering.
" Yes ! That might be a good idea ! " he replied with a slight hint of embarrassment.
Skadhi strode over to the woods and called out to the couple.
" You can come out from your hiding place . We have captured the criminal, and there no longer is a danger . " she told them in a calm soothing tone.
Dofri and Hilfa peered out from behind a large bush to make sure it was safe before stepping out into the open. As Dofri stood looking up at the large female he asked :
" Who are you ? "
Skadhi smiled. She was well aware of Odin's law of nonintervention in the human world, but it was the Valfather who had sent them, and therefore Skadhi decided that the couple had a right to know by whom they were thrown out of their home.
" I am the Goddess Skadhi, and the large red head is Thor the Almighty ! " she answered with a little smile.
" But you are just characters from the tales the visiting skalds tell ! " she blurted out.
Dofri eyes widened in fear as he quickly poked his wife in the ribs with his elbow.
" Do not anger the Gods ! " he whispered to her.
" Whether you believe or not is up to you. " the Mountain Goddess told them before walking away.
When she was halfway to where Thor was standing with his prisoner Serkr, Skadhi turned and yelled back to the couple.
" One hundred yards north of your hut I killed a large deer. It should feed you both for quite a long time. " she told them as she grinned at Thor.
Thor nodded as Skadhi approached.
" That was a nice gesture ! " he told her.
Skadhi could not help but smile at what for Thor was a " thank you ! "
" It was the least I could do for scaring them half to death. " she explained to the Thunder God.
Dofri and Hilfa ran into the woods north of their hut. The couple found the buck right where Skadhi said it would be. They both marveled at the great size of the arrow that had killed the large deer, and Hilfa never again doubted the existence of the Great Gods.
Thor pulled on the rope and began dragging Serkr back to the entrance of the Rainbow Bridge at the base of the Vastra Gotaland waterfalls. The Thunder God smiled every time the human moaned after hitting a rock or bouncing off a tree stump along the way. As they walked over the Bifrost Bridge itself Thor enjoyed very much letting the corpse dangle over the edge of the burning Rainbow Bridge and terrifying him with the endless void that lay beyond.
To drowned out the dead human's moaning and groaning Thor had begun to whistle as they traveled along. And even the usually serious Skadhi could not help but smile as the draugr thumped up each and every golden step that led to the massive doors of Odin's great hall.
As Syn opened the great golden doors Thor and Skadhi saw in the distance Odin sitting on his great high seat in the distance. The seat next to Valfather was empty, for this was no matter for the Queen of Asgard to be involved in.
When they reached a point a few feet from the slightly raised platform, Thor picked up Serkr and threw the draugr on the floor at Odin's feet. After bowing slightly Thor spoke.
" We have fulfilled our mission, and brought back the fugitive to face your final judgement ! " Thor told his father proudly.
Odin nodded as he watched the human writhing in pain on the floor.
" You have done well my son ! " Odin told his son.
Thor turned and pointed to Skadhi.
" The Mountain Goddess was of great help in apprehending the fugitive Serkr, father. " Thor added with an appreciative nod.
Skadhi had not expected such an honor from Thor, and found it difficult to hold back a grin.
" The honor was all mine Great Odin ! " she said proudly.
Serkr managed to raise himself up on his knees. He spit on the floor of the golden hall before joining the conversation.
" If you are done kissing each other's asses, can we please get on with this ! " he said to Odin in a mocking tone.
Thor's eyes flared bright red, and his face became flushed with anger. The Thunder God reached down grabbed hold of Serkr's hair with one hand and with the other he grabbed the draugr's lower jaw. With a snapping, ripping sound, that could be heard by Syn at the other end of the hall, Thor ripped off the dead man's lower jaw.
" Now you will speak no more foul treacherous one ! " Thor said angrily as he threw the jaw bone on the floor.
Odin flinched slightly as he saw the human's jaw ripped from his face, but he quickly regained his composure, and spoke to the groaning draugr.
" You have become too accustomed to pain, and therefore I will not send you back to Nastrond. Instead you will spend the eternity of your death in the great void that exists at the end of the vast universe. Here you will have nothing, feel nothing, and be nothing. You will exist, without an existence ! " he told the walking corpse.
Odin then picked up his great staff and placed it upon the head of the still writhing draugr.
" I sentence you to an existence of non - existence ! " he shouted.
In a great flash of light the draugr was gone forever.
Skadhi raised her eyebrows in astonishment as the draugr named Serkr, and his detached jawbone, disappeared in a flash of light.
Stunned Skadhi whispered to herself :
" And such is the power of Odin ! "
