Gullveig : Friend Of Wicked Women
Odin sensed that something was not quite right in Midgard. His greatest creation, the beings known as humans, seemed to be at each other's throats for no apparent reason. His Midgardian children had always shown a propensity for anger and violence, but lately their behavior was becoming unbelievable. As the wanderer he had traveled extensively through the great lands of the north, on Midgard, and he had seen his children at their best, and their worst,.... but this,.... this was something different.
While Odin sat upon Hlidskjalf totally engrossed in the many changes that had taken place on Midgard in such a short time , he failed to notice that his wife Frigga had entered the great viewing room.
" Something must be done about this ! " she exclaimed .
Then All - Mother added :
" Men are beating their wives ! Wives are killing their husbands ! And the children, those poor innocent children, are caught in the middle and are being harmed ! " she stated in an uncharacteristic harsh tone.
Odin calmly motioned for his wife to sit with him.
" Last night a woman called out to me asking for my help. She said that she had dishonored me, and her people. The woman, who is called Mjaðveig, seemed very upset, and a little frightened. I believe that she knows something about what is going on in Midgard, which is why I am watching her, and the friend she travels with very closely. " Odin explained to his wife.
Frigga squeezed her husband's arm lovingly before sitting down on the high - seat next to him.
" I am sorry ! I should have known that you were already looking into the grave circumstances of their bizarre behavior. " she told her husband with a smile.
Realizing that her husband would not reply, Frigga laughed, and shook her head.
" I often wonder why your Midgardian children think that you do not hear them when they speak to you. It is perfectly obvious that you care very much for them ! " she added as she followed her husband's gaze down into the Midgardian lands of Norway.
Surprisingly, Odin glanced up from the viewing floor, and with a serious look etched on his face replied to a subject that often bothered him.
" I hear them ! I hear all of them ! They are like crickets chirping in a forest, ..... only the dawn does not stop them from speaking ! " he told her.
Then he looked away, and gently pounded the arm of his high - seat.
" But many ask for frivolous nonsense ! They ask that their wagon last for one more year,.... or that their ship not spring a leak on their long journey. They ask for a sunny day when it is raining, and rain when they have too many sunny days. They want me to advise them on which days to travel, or if this is the year they should go raiding ! My brothers and I did not create them without the ability to think and act for themselves. We gave them a strong form, features, and a mind ! And most of all we empowered them with the Gods' given right of free will,...... and yet they still ask me, or one of the other Gods, to decide for them ! " he explained with a hint of frustration in his voice.
Frigga smiled and kissed her husband on the cheek.
" And yet you still love them very much ! " she said proudly.
Odin chuckled and shook his head.
" How can I not ?! They are wonderful beings, .... well,.... most of the time. At the moment I am not sure exactly what is going on. " he replied.
Frigga pointed to the woman named Mjaðveig and remarked :
" It appears that your Midgardian admirer is going on a trip. " she commented.
" Yes ! She has been loading casks onto her cart all morning. Mjaðveig appears to be waiting for someone. " he pointed out.
Both Frigga and Odin then watched as a figure slowly emerged from the forest and walked towards the cart.
" Possibly the one for whom she awaits is that woman . " Frigga remarked.
Odin nodded but said nothing.
They both watched as the mystery woman walked over to the cart and began talking to Mjaðveig. After a moment Frigga tapped her husband on the shoulder.
" Do you know who she is ? " she asked.
Odin nodded again.
" She is called Arinvi. " he answered.
Odin carefully observed their every movement. The two women spoke for a short moment and then walked to the back of the loaded cart. Arinvi then appeared to point to a cask. Mjaðveig walked over to the cask in question and struggled to pull out the stopper that plugged the cask. When it appeared that Mjaðveig had given up and could not remove the stubborn stopper, Arinvi pushed her aside and from several feet away snapped her fingers. There was a spark of light that arced over to the cask, and in a flash the stopper flew into her hand.
Odin and Frigga glanced over at one another with raised eyebrows.
" I have never seen a human use seidr to move things ! " Frigga exclaimed.
" Midgardians can make potions, and predict the future, .... sometimes. But they cannot move objects with the power of their minds. That my dear is not a human ! " Odin explained.
Odin quickly stood up and looked over to the entrance of the viewing room .
" Hermod ! " Valfather shouted.
Like a ghost suddenly appearing from nowhere, Hermod stood in the doorway.
" Yes, my Lord ! " he obediently answered.
Ride to Sessrumnir, and bring Freyja here at once ! " Odin commanded.
" Yes, my Lord ! " Hermod responded before briskly walking out of the great hall.
Once outside Valhalla Hermod ran to where Sleipnir was tied up, released the great horse, and mounted it quickly.
" To Sessrumnir Sleipnir ! " Hermod ordered.
Without having to kick the eight legged horse, or pull on its reins, Sleipnir turned, and after getting a running start, leaped into the air, and flew across Asgard like a star streaking across the heavens. In what seemed to Hermod to be not more than a blink of an eye he could see the home of the Vanir Goddess in the distance.
Hermod found the Goddess of Love in her garden. Although Odin had said that he wanted him to bring the Vanir Goddess to Valhalla immediately, Hermod stood and listened to Freyja recite erotic poetry for a few moments. When she finished Hermod cleared his throat to gain her attention.
" My Lady ! Odin wants to see you at once on a matter of great importance ! " he informed her.
Freyja slowly spun around and smiled.
" Did you like my poem ? " she asked seductively.
Hermod could not help but blush.
" Ah,.... yes ! It was very nice! " he replied nervously.
Freyja giggled as her eyes ventured below his waist.
" Yes ! I can see that you liked it very much ! "
Hermod's face turned bright red.
" My Lady Freyja ! Odin made it sound as though it were urgent that you come at once ! " Hermod restated.
" Yes ! Yes !! " Freyja replied.
The Vanir Goddess closed her eyes and held up her hands to the heavens. The elemental power that she summoned swirled around her like a tornado. Then, when the force reached its apex she clapped her hands together and a great portal opened up in front of her. Without looking back at Hermod she walked through the distortion in time and space and was gone. Moments later so too was the portal.
Hermod shook his head.
" After coming all this way the least she could have done was ridden back with me to Valhalla ! " he said dejectedly.
Odin and Frigga were still observing Mjaðveig, and her friend Arinvi, when the wall behind them suddenly began to make crackling sounds, much like the roar lightning makes in mid strike.
Frigga shook her head and asked :
" Why can't she simply use the front door like other Asgardians ? "
" She is of the Vanir race, my love, and they are,...., well, .... different ! " he explained.
A moment later Freyja walked into the viewing room through the opening in time and space, and joined the rulers of Asgard.
Frigga rolled her eyes when she caught sight of the dress that the Vanir Goddess was wearing. The gown was white, but was so sheer that it showed off Freyja's ample bosom, and it had a slit in the side that went from the hem all the way up to her waist. Frigga wondered to herself why the Vanir Goddess even bothered to put on clothes at all !
Odin, like most males, was momentarily stunned by her beauty, but unlike many others the Valfather was able to control his carnal urges better, and quickly recovered his senses.
" I need for you to go to Midgard ! We seem to be having a, .... situation there ! " Odin explained.
Freyja stroked her beautiful long hair several times before answering.
" The Midgardians were created by you and therefore they are your problem and not mine. " she replied .
Odin bit his lip, stood up and walked around his high - seat to address her face to face.
" I am asking you nicely, pleading with you, if you prefer, to please go to Midgard and find out who is causing so much disharmony there. " Odin asked her patiently.
Freyja tightened her lips and narrowed her eyes.
" And once again I must tell you that these " humans " are your problem and are not a concern of the Vanir. " she replied more sternly.
Frigga jumped up off of her high - seat, and spoke to the Vanir Goddess angrily.
" Perhaps the Midgardians are of no concern to you, but I believe that seidr being practiced by these " humans " is ! " she stated coldly.
The Vanir Goddess studied the serious expressions that were etched on the Aesir Gods' faces, and then she stepped forward and peered down at the blue world.
" Seidr ?! " Perhaps I will visit Midgard ! " she stated almost as though it were her idea.
