Gullveig : Friend Of Wicked Women
The Vanir Investigate
Freyja found her father not in his hall, but at his favorite resting spot. She smiled as she watched Njord dangling his feet in the cooling waves of the bay while he sat on his golden dock. Just as she was sure her father would be here, she also knew that he would be aware of his presence. The Vanir could detect any disruption in space and time, and furthermore had a sixth sense about being watched.
" My daughter does not visit me near enough these days ! " Njord commented as he gently splashed his feet in the bay.
Freyja came up from behind and hugged her father.
" I am a busy woman with a husband and two young and very mischievous children . " the Goddess explained after kissing her father on the cheek.
Njordr gently grabbed his daughter's hand and kissed it.
" Where are my grandchildren ? Why have you not brought them to visit ? " Njord asked his daughter.
Freyja let go of her father's hand, and stepped to his side, so she could look him in the eyes.
" I am afraid that this is not a social visit father. There is trouble in Midgard, and although that is a realm protected by the Asgardians, someone, or something, is practicing evil seidr there, and we must investigate father. " she explained.
" Those Midgardians are always dabbling in,..... what is it they call it ? Ah, yes,..... black magic. Each of us Vanir have more power to conjure the forces of the universe in our little fingers than all of the Midgardians combined ! " he reminded his daughter.
Freyja looked out over the peaceful bay before replying.
" That may well be father, but someone, or something, has cast a spell over Midgard that has these humans at each other's throats for many miles around ! " she informed her father .
Njord pulled his feet out of the refreshing water, and quickly jumped to his feet on the dock.
" A hate spell of that magnitude would require a being of great power to summon such an immense force to inflict that much harm ! " he replied to his daughter.
" We must go to Midgard at once ! " Njord told Freyja with a great sense of urgency.
Before opening a portal through time and space to Midgard, Njord and Freyja changed themselves from Gods into the form of the human beings, much like those who lived on the great blue world. Njord transformed himself into a crusty old man who looked as though he had spent most of his life on the high seas. He shook his head in dismay, however, when he saw the form that Freyja had chosen to chang into.
" Is my daughter so vain that she can not even look plain when in disguise ? " he asked, not trying to hide his displeasure.
Then he added sarcastically :
" You look like a queen, and not like the daughter of a simple seaman such as myself. "
Freyja pouted for a moment before replying.
" Just because I have to mingle with those ugly Midgardians does not mean that I have to look as horrible as they do ! " she replied with a smile as she fluffed her hair.
Njord did not reply to his daughter's comment, but instead raised his hands high over his head and drew in the power of the cosmos. In a flash the Vanir God opened a portal to the Midgardian realm.
" Shall we ? " Njord asked his daughter as he pointed to the swirling doorway.
Freyja paused for a moment.
" While we are in these forms you should call me Mardoll father,..... and I will call you Odr, .... my husband's name. " she told him.
" That would be wise ! " he replied.
Then he quickly added :
" How is your husband ? "
Freyja's eyes watered for a moment before she answered.
" I am not sure. He is away again ! "
Odr / Njord disliked the windy, cold and gloomy human world. The brisk breeze did, however, allow him to easily test the air with his senses .
" The hate spell was not transmitted through the air ! " he announced to his daughter.
Mardoll / Freyja nodded.
" And although here in this area surrounding the forest known as the Jarnvid, the spell is strongest it is not contained within the water either ! " she commented after tasting her fingers that she had dipped into a stream near where they had come through .
Odr stroked his chin while lost in deep thought.
" Then the spell must have been introduced to the humans in their food " he deduced after serious deliberation.
Mardoll shook her head in disbelief.
" Yes ! But how could someone get so many of these people to eat the same thing ? " she asked aloud.
Njord grinned at his daughter before replying to her question.
" To find the answer to that question, my dear, I believe that we will have to visit the market in the village to see exactly what these humans consume on a regular basis. " he informed his daughter.
The market in the nearest village was as easy to find as markets on any world. All the Gods, in human form, had to do was follow the local men and women and they were led right to what these Midgardians called the market square. Once there, the father and daughter investigators split up to see as much as they possibly could to identify the food source. Mardoll browsed the vendors on the left, while Odr visited the ones on the right. In between pretending to be interested shoppers they both questioned the merchants as to what was the best seller in the market.
When they returned to the Jarnvid forest they compared what they had seen and been told. The Gods quickly realized that it was not food at all that sold best at the market as of late, but was instead liquid refreshments such as mead and ale . They both had also discovered that the best tasting, and therefore best selling alcohol, was the mead made by a woman named Mjaðveig and her partner Arinvi.
The Vanir Gods were fairly sure that they now knew who, and how, the spell was being dispersed. What they didn't know as of yet was why this evil had been unleashed upon Midgard. And for the moment the answer to that question was not as important as undoing the damage that had already been done.
After a lengthy discussion Odr / Njord, and Mardoll / Freyja decided that they needed to make a new spell, a love spell, to counter the one that had already been spread over this portion of Midgard. The formulation of a new spell was actually quite easy . The hard part was going to be how to administer it to every Midgardian affected by the hate spell !
