Ítreksjóð : The Guardian Of Asgard's Treasure
Farbauti : Lord Of The Frost Giants
Farbauti was seated upon his ice throne when Stigandi, one of his most trusted guards, threw open the massive doors of the ice palace and ran up to where the Lord of the Frost Giants sat with an angry scowl on his face.
" Great leader ! A Dwarf is here to see you,... he says that he has come here on an urgent matter of great importance to both Jotuns and Dwarves. " Stigandi told his Lord.
Farbauti was about to instruct Stigandi as to what to do with the Dwarf when he heard the doors slowly creak open, and saw a little creature standing in the feint light that filtered in.
" It seems that our little visitor is very eager to see me. Bring him forward ! " he instructed his guard in a gruff voice.
" Yes, great leader ! " he replied before walking down the long aisle back to the entrance.
Stigandi towered over the little Dwarf like a mountain over a rabbit. He stared down at the nervous little creature for a moment before reaching down and grabbing the Dwarf by the collar and lifting him up so they were face to face.
" Farbauti will see you now ! " he told the Dwarf.
Instead of placing the Dwarf back down Stigandi carried the little creature all the way up the aisle and deposited him roughly on the floor in front of the Jotun leader.
" This is Durinn, my Lord. He claims to be the leader of the Dwarves of Svartalfheim. " Stigandi explained before turning and leaving.
Durinn was not used to being handled in such a rough manner. In his underground realm he was revered as the Dwarves leader, and only Motsognir garnered more praise than he. To be treated in this way was not right, and as he picked himself up off of the floor he was about to complain when he looked up and saw the massive Jotun who sat on the ice high - seat above him. He quickly decided to take a more humble approach.
" Great Farbauti ! " he started with a little bow.
" As your fellow Jotun has informed you I am Durinn, the leader of the Dwarves of Svartalfheim, and I have come here today to make a deal with you ! " he explained calmly to the Giant.
Farbauti tapped his frozen fingernails impatiently on the arm of his high - seat.
" And what do the Dark Elves have to offer the Frost Giants ? " he asked.
Durinn smiled and pulled a coin out of his pocket.
" Gold ! Silver ! And Asgard's other treasures ! " he replied as he shook his head up and down , and raised his eyebrows, in a tantalizing manner.
Farbauti frowned and leaned forward in his seat to get a better look at the Dwarf who had peaked his interest.
" And just how do you plan on getting Asgard's wealth out of the golden realm, little one ? " Farbauti asked as he scratched his chin.
" With your help of course ! " the Dwarf replied.
" Heimdall shall hear us coming from halfway across the universe ! The Asgardians will be ready and waiting for us long before we reached Bifrost ! " he told the little Dwarf.
Durinn's face took on a very serious look.
" And that is exactly what I am counting on ! " Durinn told the Frost Giant.
Farbauti reached down and held out his hand, palm up, to the Dwarf. Durinn climbed onto the hand and the Jotun lifted him up to the arm of the high - seat where he jumped off.
" You intrigue me little one ! Tell me more ! " the Giant insisted.
Durinn could see that he had gotten the attention of the Frost Giant , and he decided to take full advantage of it.
" If you and your Frost Giants can keep the Asgardians engaged on top of the Rainbow Bridge, then we Dwarves will be able to infiltrate into Asgard by sneaking underneath the cosmic bridge. " Durinn explained.
Farbauti pulled back his head and frowned.
" What ?! How can you travel under Bifrost ? ! " he asked with incredulity lacing each word.
Durinn reached into a pouch he had tied to his waist and pulled out two strange looking objects with rings on the ends.
" These we patterned after the suckers of an octopus. Once they grab hold of something they do not let go very easily. The first Dwarf I send across the bottom of the Rainbow Bridge will put these in place. Then all the other Dwarves will simply cross the bridge using their hands instead of their feet. " Durinn explained as he held one of the suckers up to show Farbauti.
The Lord of the Frost Giants reached down with his hand to grab one of the strange contraptions. As he did Durinn stuck the suction device on to the end of his finger. With a slight sucking sound it held fast. The fascinated Jotun pulled his finger up to his eyes and examined it very closely. It appeared as the Dwarf had described it. An Octopus' suction cup with a ring attached to the other end.
When Farbauti had seen enough he tried to pull off the little device. The first time it would not budge at all. The second try fared little better. Frustrated, the Jotun stood up and pulled mightily on the tiny ring. With a great sucking sound it gave way and finally came off. Farbauti tried not to seem flustered as he placed the tiny object next to Durinn on the arm of the seat.
" It is much stronger than it looks ! " the Jotun admitted.
The great Jotun leader thought for a moment and then asked :
" It is obvious why we, the Jotuns, would want to steal the Asgardian's treasure. After many wars with the Gods we have become very poor here in our wrecked and desolate realm. But why would the Dwarves want to take the chance of being annihilated by the Gods ? " Farbauti asked.
Durinn's face became distorted with anger as he replied.
" We Dwarves are tired of being used for our great skills as craftsmen. We are fed up with the poor compensation we receive for the fine products we make for the Gods. But what we are most disgusted with is the way these Asgardians treat us. They made us rise out of the earth like maggots, but when we try to enrich ourselves we are stomped back into that same earth under the boots of the Gods ! "
Farbauti nodded in agreement.
" Yes ! I heard how Thor needlessly kicked your fellow Dwarf Lit into Balder's funeral pyre simply because he had gotten in his way. They treat my Giants with the same disrespect ! " he told the Dwarf.
Durinn looked up hopefully at the Frost Giant .
" Then we have a deal ? " he inquired.
Farbauti placed his palm on the edge of the chair arm and allowed Durinn to hop on. Unlike Stigandi before him, the Jotun leader gently placed his hand upon the floor, and allowed the Dwarf to slide off easily.
" Yes ! The deal has been struck ! Together we will steal Asgard's gold right out from under them,....and in the process we will embarrass the great Odin ! " Farbauti shouted happily.
