Jord : The Goddess Born In The Cosmos
A Union Of Heaven And Earth
As with most females she had a sixth sense about the special attention being paid to her by the one known throughout the nine worlds as the All - Father. The World Goddess liked to put on a good show for her admirer, and would often make certain that waterfalls were flowing at full capacity, and that her meadows were in full bloom when the Lord of Asgard was watching. She could sense that Odin was interested in her, and that fell perfectly into her plans.
Jord liked to tease Odin from time to time with her great power as well. Within moments of feeling Odin's gaze upon her she would make great volcanoes erupt, and cause earthquakes that could be felt for many miles around. If she was feeling especially naughty the great World Goddess would make towering icebergs break off from their ice shelves, and go crashing into the north seas, while at the same time spawning violent hurricanes that would spin in the southern hemisphere.
Odin was so attracted to this new world Goddess that he began to come to see her more and more often. Crossing over the Rainbow Bridge he would wander around her beautiful lands, and become intoxicated by the smell of her many fragrances. It was during one of these visits that Jord came out to meet him in a form more readily recognized by him.
The All - father was lying up against a large oak tree by the shore of a lake, enjoying the shade it provided against Sunna's powerful glare, when suddenly he felt the tree move behind him. Odin jumped up just in time to watch as the great oak transformed into a woman as beautiful as any flower he had seen in his travels on Midgard.
" I am the Goddess who you, and your kind, have named Jord. " she told the startled God.
Odin took a moment to compose himself before answering.
" You are even more beautiful than the world you have created ! " Odin stated, trying not to sound overly eager.
" Why have you chosen this moment to reveal your true self to me ? " All - Father asked suspiciously.
The Goddess laughed as she seductively walked over to the Lord of Asgard.
" I will not lie to you, great one, I am in need of your help ! These Giants from Jotunheim continue to invade my lands, and kill our children. I do the best I can to dissuade them from coming, but I am not strong enough to drive them out of Midgard permanently. " she told him with a shy little smile.
Odin grinned from ear to ear as he followed the slit in her dress all the way up to her thigh. He paused there for a moment before looking into the eyes of the World Goddess.
" And how is it that I may help the maiden who stands before me in distress ? " he asked with a knowing smile.
Jord raised her chin up to the heavens proudly and replied boldly :
" Give me a son to protect my lands, and your human children, from these invaders ! " she blurted out.
To her great surprise Odin did not flinch, or react much at all ! The Lord of Asgard simply backed away a few steps from Jord and raised his arms in the air. Slowly he began to turn into vapor, and formed a cloud that hung over the World Goddess. Jord understood and melted into the earth like snow on a warm day. The cloud then fell upon the ground and hung there.
Suddenly there were many great flashes of lightning within the cloud, and one burst, which was particularly powerful, struck Mother Earth with such force that from it was born a being that washed up on the shore of the lake. Many years later a Midgardian skald would write a poem to describe the birth from this union of heaven and earth.
In a time so very long ago, forgotten by most,
Took place a magical tale, for which I must boast,
All - Father Odin one day took the form of the sky,
And over Mother Earth Jord Asgard's leader did fly.
Odin was amazed by her beauty, and her majesty too,
From the heights of her mountains, to her oceans so blue,
He admired her great strength, and this gave him a thought,
Maybe she was the one, to give him the son that he sought.
So Odin lowered himself, till the sky touched the earth,
And where Odin and Jord met, there was a sacred birth,
Out of this perfect union, was born a child on her shore,
Red haired and immensely strong, Odin named his son Thor.
