Jord : The Goddess Born In The Cosmos
A Lasting Peace
War Gods do not need to be suckled, nor do they need to be weened ! Thor was ready for battle the moment he was born from the explosive force of the mighty lightning strike. Jord and Odin fashioned a crude stone hammer from the heaviest of granite, and gave it to their child on his birth day. Thor accepted the fine gift and held it up to the heavens. Suddenly, the skies lit up all around Midgard ! Thor had retained within himself the elemental power from which he was born, and the God of Thunder wanted everything that lived on Midgard to know of his great strength. At the same time the Thunder God's display of power was a warning to every Jotun who had dared to set foot on his mother's lands.
The Midgardians were still in their intellectual infancy, and did not fully comprehend the implications of the forces that were about to meet on their world. This was a time when the woolly mammoth, and the saber tooth tiger roamed the earth. Mankind had just begun to use their evolving minds to create primitive weapons and had no concept of the horrors of real war. The only remnant and memory the humans left behind of the war between Thor and the Jotuns were strange cave paintings of large human creatures being struck by lightning. These would one day be interpreted by modern humans as proof of alien invaders.
Thor did not want his parent's children to be injured in the great war that was about to commence, so he chose to meet them in the middle of the northern ocean, on a bleak island with many active volcanoes, and little if any vegetation. The young Thunder God chose this land also because he did not want any help from his mother. Without the lush vegetation that covered other lands Jord would not be able to form and join in the fight. For this battle was his, and his alone. It was what he was conceived to do !
Upon a flat plain that lead down to the northern ocean, Thor, confident and alone, met the Jotuns face to face. Swinging his hammer from side to side he attacked an army of Giants smiting them one by one until the few remaining Jotuns turned and scurried back to the safety of Jotunheim like scared rats.
In this great battle Thor broke his crude stone hammer, which he proudly showed to his parents after defeating the Jotun horde. Odin told his son that he was proud of his great accomplishment, and that to reward him for his victory he would ask the Dwarves to fashion him a better, much stronger hammer made from the metal of the earth.
The Giants felt that they were safe back in their homeland, but Jotunheim was no longer a sanctuary for the descendants of Ymir. Jord may not have have been able to leave the world that she melded herself into, but Thor had no such restrictions, and chased down the Jotuns who had invaded Midgard one by one. With his new hammer Mjolnir, Thor was a force to be reckoned with throughout the nine worlds !
With Jord providing for the Midgardians every need, and Thor protecting them from danger, Odin began to share his great wealth of knowledge and wisdom with his children. When the precious mead of poetry spilled out upon Midgard the Lord of Asgard allowed them to keep the magical potion. Those who drank its sweet nectar are today called skalds. Under Odin's tutelage these once simple and barbaric humans quickly began to prosper, and multiply. Then they molded the world to suit their needs.
From caves, to villages, to great fortified cities, humankind developed by leaps and bounds with the guiding hands and minds of their great Gods and Goddesses. But none of this would have been possible without the Great Goddess of fertility and life named Jord. The great Goddess who was born in the cosmos !
All hail, and praise, Great Mother Earth Jord, for she is the great provider, protector, and matriarch to us all. May we, Odin's children, live cradled in her bountiful womb for eternity !
