The Jotuns took out their full fury on the empty village before heading down to the docks. Every hut, longhouse, and animal pen was leveled with a ferocity that made those who formed the shield wall shake with fear. A few men and women peed themselves when they realized that their deaths were only moments away. But no one panicked, and no one fled. Every warrior and shield maiden held their positions in the shield wall.
Sigvaldi watched in horror from the great height of the dam, and his heart ached when he heard the screams of the women and children as the Jotuns headed for the docks. One ship had already left and was raising its sails, while the others were still casting off their mooring lines.Sigvaldi took a deep breath as he held the large hammer firmly in his hands ready to break the first board at the top of the dam. Once the first few boards were removed he knew that the pressure would become too great and the earthen dam would quickly be breached flooding the village below. Tofte's ultimate sacrifice Sigvaldi hoped, would save the rest of the towns and villages to the south from a similar fate as they had experienced.
Sigvaldi took one last deep breath and was about to strike the dam wall when he suddenly spotted a Jotun coming straight at him ! Although he knew it was a futile act the Tofte Chieftain lifted the hammer over his head to try and defend himself. At the same moment that the Jotun raised his stone weapon to strike him down, Sigvaldi instinctively ducked as something flew over his head.
Modi yelled a blood curdling screech as he ran out from behind the dam wall, and jumped over the human. With his razor sharp sword in hand the angry God swung his weapon at the startled Jotun. Thorn barely had a chance to react to the new threat ! He was so focused on the puny human's little hammer that he did not notice the Asgardian until it was too late. The Jotun did manage to raise one arm to defend himself, but it was not enough to stop steel forged by the best Dwarve craftsmen. The blade cut his arm off at the wrist, and then continued on severing his head from his body. The last thing that Thorn saw before his eyes closed forever was the world spinning before him as his head flew through the air.
Sigvaldi did not understand what was happening, but he kept his head about him and decided to use this brief moment to knock out the boards and destroy the dam. With all his might he swung the hammer at the dam wall. The hammer's head, however, never had a chance to strike the boards. A hand four times the size of his stopped the hammer in mid - flight .
" I will not allow you to flood the village killing everyone ! " Modi told the human in perfect Norse.
Sigvaldi stared at the strange being for a moment before replying.
" You Jotuns must die ! " Sigvaldi yelled back at this new creature.
Modi rarely smiled, but the human's words brought a grin to his face.
" I am not a Jotun little one ! Odin has commanded we Asgardians to save your people...... and you do not have to worry for my brother Magni will take care of the Jotuns below. " Modi told the human as he pointed down towards the village.
Sigvaldi dropped his hammer and turned his gaze down upon the docks. In his sudden state of shock all he could do was repeat Modi's words.
" Odin has commanded..... ?"
The second ship was about to leave the docks, and set its sails, when suddenly the first ship to leave rose up out of the sea and was lifted into the air by a strange looking Jotun. This Giant was not hairy and mean looking like the others, but instead appeared almost pleasant in appearance. The creature gently sat the ship onto the ground next to the shield wall and then turned to face the Jotun leader Atla.
" Odin, along with his brothers, created this world, and it was he who fathered these human beings in his image. They are protected by my father Thor, and in turn by my brother Modi and myself. " he told Atla in the language of the Jotuns.
Atla laughed at the bold God !
" May I have your name so that I will know who it is I have killed ? " he asked the God sarcastically.
Magni proudly pushed out his chest as he replied.
" I am Magni, son of Thor and Jarnsaxa ! And I am here to defend this village and these people ..... " Magni paused and smiled..... " And to kill all Jotuns who have invaded my grandfather's lands ! " he told Atla confidently.
Atla immediately decided he had heard enough from this brash " God " , for whom he had never seen or heard of . The Jotun leader screamed as he drew his stone weapon, and then he ran at the God with his hone held high over his head ready to strike the Asgardian down.
Magni did not flinch, nor did he waver as the Jotun approached. With one hand he grabbed hold of the Jotun's weapon, and with the other he wrapped his strong hand around the Giant's throat and made a fist . As he lifted the Jotun leader off of the ground choking him, Magni broke the hone into a thousand pieces with his other hand.
A gasp rose up from the human warriors, and the shield maidens, as the the debris from the hone flew in their direction. Most raised their shields to protect themselves, but a few watched in awe as the Jotun leader slowly choked to death from this new strange beings ever tightening grip.
When the Jotun went limp Magni threw the dead Giant aside as if he were as light as a feather. Atla's body hit the ground in front of the remaining Jotuns with a sickening thud that caused the Giants to flinch, and take a step backward. The Giants raised their eyes up from their dead leader's body and looked at each other. Then, as though they were reading each other's minds, they began to run away.
Leifi, who led the retreat, made it to the edge of the forest when an object flew across the clearing and struck him in the head crushing his skull. The great hammer that delivered the blow hovered over the dead Jotun for only a moment before returning to its master's hand.
Ymsi, was close behind Leifi and saw his comrade fall dead in front of him. He stopped only for a moment to change direction when he felt himself being lifted by his ankles. As he looked at his captor up side down he shook his head frantically.
" No ! NO !! " he begged.
Magni, however, showed the Jotun no mercy. He beat the Giant up against a boulder the way a maiden would slap clothing up against a rock in a stream to clean them. When Magni was sure that the bloody mess was dead he threw the mangled corpse into the woods, and then turned to face the holder of the sacred hammer .
" I did not expect to see you here father ! I had heard from grandfather that you were busy fighting Jotuns in the east ! " Magni said with a hint of sarcasm.
" There are no Jotuns left in the east to fight ! " he replied to his son.
Thor then turned his attention to the remaining living Jotun. Am, who had been injured by one of the swinging logs, knelt down on the ground before the Gods.
" We were not strong enough to defeat you, and therefore I, as the last Jotun in Midgard, am now prepared to die by your hand ! " Am told the God of Thunder as he lowered his head in expectation of a killing blow.
Thor grabbed the Jotun, and lifted him to his feet.
" No ! You will live my cowardly enemy ! You will return to Jotunheim and tell your folk that if they ever set foot in Midgard again I will not only kill all those who invade these lands, but I will travel to Jotunheim, and wreak such devastation on your realm as has never been seen before in all the nine worlds ! " he screamed at the injured Jotun.
Thor then threw the Jotun to the ground and glared at him. Magni shook his head and laughed.
" Go now while my father is still feeling generous ! " Magni told the terrified Jotun.
As Modi and Sigvaldi approached, Am headed into the forest, and disappeared from sight.
