Njord : A Jealous God
Skadhi Searches For Njord
" Njord ! Njord ! I have come to visit ! " Skadhi shouted as she opened the door to his hall. " Njord ? " she yelled again as she looked around questioning whether he was there. Skadhi closed the door, and looked back over at Swift Runner. " Has he left ? " she asked the wolf. Her canine companion ran over to her, circled around her, and then ran off back down the road as if to tell Skadhi to follow. Skadhi understood that Swift Runner was telling her that Njord had come home, but had left . Skadhi then turned and waved to Little Growler : " Come on fur ball ! It looks as though we are going to take another little journey." she told him with a smile. The little bear jumped up and down in excitement at the thought of another adventure. Skadhi laughed. " Oh, you like that idea don' t you ? " she asked. In the pit of her stomach, however, Skadhi had an uneasy feeling.
It was not long before Skadhi started to question Swift Runner about the direction they were going. Instead of heading along the shoreline, or towards the rainbow bridge, they were headed back towards the mountains. " Why would Njord go back into the mountains he had just come from ? " she asked Swift Runner. " He hates the mountains ! " she added. Swift Runner gave her an angry look as if to say : " I am a good tracker, and I have his scent ! " Skadhi smiled at her wolf friend : " Alright ! I trust you my friend. Lead the way ! " she told him as she patted him on the head. Skadhi relied on Swift Runner' s acute senses until they reached the snow line, and then she was able to track her husband herself.
When they reached her hall at Thrymheim, she followed his footsteps around the great hall, and was surprised to see that they then lead away from her home, and went off into the mountains. " Why would my husband come here, but not stay, or even go inside ? " she asked out loud. " Because once he found out you were not here, he told me he had urgent business elsewhere. " Bjorgolf told her as she started to walk away from her hall. Skadhi, who had been deep in thought, was startled by the Jotun's sudden answer. " Bjorgolf ! I forgot that you were here ! Did my husband say where he was going ? " she asked the Jotun. " No he did not. " he replied. " He did seem rather angry though Skadhi . " he told her. " Something is not right here Bjorgolf ! I am going after my husband, and may be away for a time my friend. " she told the Jotun, as she turned and walked towards the tracks that led into the forest. " I wish you a safe journey my friend ! " Bjorgolf yelled after her. Skadhi did not reply. She was too busy picking up the trail of her husband .
Skadhi and her animal friends traveled through the night, and by daybreak they had reached a plateau about halfway up the mountain. Njord' s tracks led up to the entrance of a cave, where they were suddenly joined by hundreds of other footprints. These other impressions in the snow were smaller, and slightly misshapen, compared to Njord' s footprints. " He always did have the perfect feet ! " she said to herself. When she bent down to take a closer look at the smaller tracks, she realized what they were, and jumped up. She reached instinctively into her quiver, and put an arrow on her bow as she carefully walked through the entrance to the cave. " Follow me, but keep your distance ! " she told Little Growler and Swift Runner.
The wolf and the bear looked at each and then fell back.
Because of the low light the Dwarves spotted Skadhi before she spotted them. The male Dwarves quickly gathered with their stone clubs to confront the intruder, who they recognized as their enemy, the mountain Goddess Skadhi. King Virvir, who was resting after saying farewell to Njord, emerged from his hut to see what all the commotion was about. What he saw made him stop in mid - step ! His Dwarves looked as though they were ready for a battle, and a rather large woman was pointing an immense bow at his warriors ! " Skadhi !? " King Virvir shouted in his coarse little voice. " Have you come here to kill more of our people ! ? " he added angrily. " I was told that Odin had made a peace settlement between the Rock Dwarves, and the Mountain Goddess over the killing of a few of your wolves ! " he shouted at her.
" It was more than a few wolves Dwarf ! " she shouted back. " But that is not the reason I am here today, my ugly little friend. I am searching for my husband, Njord . " she told him. " I have tracked him to this cave. Is he here ? " she asked the Dwarf.
" No ! The sea God left this morning , Ski Goddess. " King Virvir told her, as he motioned for his warriors to put down their weapons. " Do you know where he was traveling to my little friend ? " Skadhi asked. " I am not your friend Skadhi, but I will tell you that your husband was asking how to get to Ydalir to see Ullr. " the Dwarf king told her. Skadhi lowered her bow and put the arrow back into her quiver. "Oh no ! He wouldn' t ! Would he ? " she asked herself. " Come quickly my friends ! " she said as she ran past Little Growler and Swift Runner.
Skadhi ran all the way to Ydalir as fast as she could. Swift Runner was able to keep up with her, but poor Little Growler had to stop and rest often, and fell further and further behind. The bad feeling that she had felt in her stomach had grown into a horrible fear that now covered her. As Skadhi ran down the back side of the mountain that led to Ullr' s home in the dale, she suddenly heard the wind begin to howl with a tremendous force. And she heard something else. Something much more sinister. She heard swords clanging against one another just below her. As Skadhi ran towards the sounds of battle, she placed an arrow on her bowstring without missing a stride. She hoped that she could reach them before it was too late !
