Nøkken : The Water Spirit
A New Love
Haki had mixed feelings about Åndeløs. He was forever indebted to the stranger who had saved his life that day in the pond, and the way the farmhand had roped and pulled the Bäckahäst out of the water was amazing to him. He was also grateful to Åndeløs for all the help he was giving his mother around the farm. And although Haki had to admit that it was because of Åndeløs that his mother no longer went down to the pond to cry every day, he also felt as though he was somehow betraying his father, who he had loved very much, by being nice to Åndeløs. He wanted to talk to his mother about all of this, but she seemed so happy, and he did not want to make her sad again.
Sefa was tired of having to hide her feelings for Åndeløs from her son. She wanted to be able to wake up next to the man she made love with, and not have to sneak back and forth from the barn to the house in the middle of the night as if they were doing something wrong. What Sefa wanted most of all, however, was to marry Åndeløs, and live happily ever after like the characters in the fairy tales that her parents had told her when she was a child.
Then one day she decided it was time to bring up the subject of marriage. Sefa packed a huge lunch, placed it in a little wooden basket, grabbed a large blanket, and went out to the fields near the pond where she found Åndeløs checking on the wheat. Although she had not thought of it at the time, Sefa had put on a dress that morning that showed off much more of her cleavage than most of the other one's she owned, and she knew that Åndeløs loved to see her naked skin. She happily strutted out to the fields thinking to herself that she had the two things that could turn any man's heart. A curvaceous body and food !
Åndeløs still had a lot of weeding to do in the wheat field when Sefa came out to see him, but the promise of a cool drink, good food, and a chance to be with the woman he loved, quickly convinced him that the field work could wait just a little longer.
As she spread the blanket out on the grass above the pond shoreline Sefa could not help but notice that Åndeløs seemed to be paying more attention to the pond than to her.
" Men are funny ! ", she thought to herself, " When they want sex a woman could be wearing a canvas bag, and it would excite them, while at other times, such as at this moment, being half naked did not seem to affect them in the least ! "
Åndeløs could not stop himself from making a connection between the way Sefa's breasts rose and fell with every breath she took, and how the small waves on the pond slowly rolled onto the shore. Both excited him and made him long to be with both the comforting water he had lived in all of his life, and the woman who had made him experience feelings that he never knew existed for a Nøkken. For the moment at least it was the human that satisfied his needs.
Sefa tried not to act nervous as she poured Åndeløs a cool glass of honey tea, but her hand trembled none - the - less, which was quickly noticed by the man she loved.
" You seem a little distracted today. Is everything alright Sefa ? " Åndeløs asked genuinely concerned.
" Yes, I am fine ! " she rapidly replied, alarmed by the question.
" Well ! Something is obviously wrong. " he told her.
Sefa put down her glass of tea and gazed out at the pond before steeling her nerves and looking back at Åndeløs.
" I am just,.... well,.... uncomfortable with us sneaking around. I think we should enter into a more,... permanent situation. " she told him.
Åndeløs frowned and took a sip of tea before asking :
" What did you have in mind ? " he asked innocently.
Sefa was stunned by his response. Was he avoiding answering what she was asking him in a roundabout way, or did he really not understand what she wanted for the two of them ? .
" Umm,... well,.... I was thinking that we should get married . " she told him nervously.
Åndeløs did not act surprised by what she was proposing. In fact he seemed to have no reaction at all that Sefa could easily discern. He just sat there contemplating his answer as though she had asked him if he wanted a piece of pie, or another glass of tea. Sefa was not sure what to make of his silence, but she prepared herself for an answer she did not want to hear.
Åndeløs was perplexed. He was not quite sure what marriage was all about. Nøkken were loners. They were not born, and did not need a mate. They simply existed for an eternity as part of the natural world. He knew, however, that when Vigarr was the partner of Sefa they lived in the same house, and did not have to hide their feelings for each other from the boy.
The silence was awkward for Sefa, but Åndeløs saw nothing wrong with weighing all the possible solutions to this dilemma. After a very long time, and with a simple nod of his head, and a shrug of his shoulders, he replied nonchalantly :
" Yes, that probably would be best for the child's sake . " he finally told her.
