Nøkken : The Water Spirit
Petr and Marta did everything in their power to convince their son that marrying Sefa was a very bad idea. They threatened Vigarr by telling him that they would disown him, and take away his inheritance, small as it might be. They offered Vigarr what amounted to bribes not to seek Sefa's hand in marriage, and even went so far as to invite young eligible women out to their farm to try and entice their son to abandon the woman who lived on what they called the, " haunted farm down by the little brook " !
" You'll wind up like her mother and father ! " Marta told her son repeatedly.
" Only we won't come and visit your grave at Lillebekken ! " Petr assured Vigarr each time.
Vigarr, however, would have none of his parent's scheming. His heart was set on being with Sefa for the rest of his life, and nothing his parents might do or say could change the way he felt. Then one day, after an especially long and loud argument with his parents, Vigarr saddled his horse, and rode out to Lillebekken farm.
Sefa, was very glad to see Vigarr as always, but today he seemed to be acting a bit strange. He had asked her to pack them a lunch, harnessed her horse to a cart, and driven them out to the little falls that cascaded down the steep cliff, and into the meadow stream. As they ate a delicious meal of herring, a vegetable salad, and slices of fruit, Sefa became nervous at how quiet the usually talkative Vigarr had been all afternoon.
" Is anything wrong Vigarr ? Have I done something to make you mad at me ? " she asked with great concern.
Vigarr realized that he had been very quiet all day, and knew that it was time for him to tell Sefa how he felt about her. How
to tell her was the reason he had remained silent for so long. His mind had been racing from one way of proposing to another. Just when he thought he had found the best way to say it, that version sounded silly, and another popped into his head. But now that she had asked him what was wrong he simply decided to answer her directly.
" I would like us to be married ! You need a husband to help you run the farm,... and someone to protect you,... and ...." Vigarr's mind suddenly went blank and he was forced to pause.
Sefa put down the slice of apple she had bitten into, and smiled at Vigarr.
" And ? " she asked hoping for the right answer.
Vigarr swallowed hard.
" And I love you ! " he told her almost in a whisper.
" Well ! I think that we should get married,..... because I love you too ! " she told Vigarr as she wrapped her arms around his chest and gave him a big hug.
The wedding was a modest affair held at the farm of Vigarr's parents. Marta, after much arguing, had finally convince her son that if the ceremony and reception were held at Lillebekken farm no one would attend for fear of the curse that hung over that haunted place like a dark cloud over a valley. Vigarr very much wanted the wedding to be a happy affair for Sefa, and was willing to allow his parents to arrange things their way to stop any arguments that might taint an otherwise happy day.
After the hand tying ceremony Petr toasted his son and their new daughter - in - law with the news that he was giving them his farm. Vigarr was immediately angered by the wedding gift, and Sefa too was not happy at the prospect of leaving Lillebekken. The argument that ensued turned what should have been one of the happiest moments in their lives, into one of the ugliest. The guests were shocked when they had to restrain Petr and Vigarr from engaging in fisticuffs, while Marta and Sefa wound up in a shouting match that resounded throughout the valley.
When Vigarr finally had enough of his parents antics he harnessed his horse next to Sefa's horse on her cart, and rode away from his parent's farm.
" Stop him ! " Marta shouted frantically at her husband.
Petr, who was still being restrained from physically going after his son, yelled at his wife angrily.
" Let the fool go ! He will never return to this farm ! " he told her for all to here.
Unfortunately, though they could not have known it at the time, Petr's words would turn out to be very prophetic.
Sefa, despite trembling with anger as they rode back to Lillebekken, was happy for the first time in several years. No longer would her days be sad and hard, for now she had someone special to share her heart, her life, and the farm work with. More importantly she would not have to be lonely ever again. As they rode up the lane to her farmhouse she laid her head on his shoulder and smiled, safe in the knowledge that she once again had a man in her life.
The Nøkken watched from the Nøkkeroser as the humans returned on their rattling box. These " air beings " always made so much noise, he thought to himself. And then he laughed.
" That is until their lungs fill with water and they sink silently to the bottom ! "
