Nøkken : The Water Spirit
The Farm Hand
Åndeløs could not have been happier ! No longer did he have to see the human that he had fallen in love with through the cloudy lens of the pond water. Now he was able to gaze upon her clearly in the light of day, and he did not have to sing to her to do so ! As a Nøkken he was an outsider, a threat, an evil presence to be feared and hated. Here in the world of air and blue skies he was a friend, a trusted companion, and someone who could be admired,... and maybe loved.
Åndeløs put his boundless spirit energy into repairing the buildings on the farm, and plowing and fertilizing the various fields. With Haki, who had grown rather fond of " Uncle Åndeløs " by his side, they fixed up the farmstead, and soon had the land almost ready for planting again. There was one small problem, however. Sefa's workhorse was old and tired, and was slowing up the progress on the farm, but Åndeløs had in his mind a way to fix this as well !
One morning, as the mist lay thick upon the land, Åndeløs and Haki quietly went down to the pond. With them they carried a great length of rope, tied to a lasso on one end, and a saddle. The Nøkken, in human disguise undressed and placed the rope in his mouth, before diving into the cold water. Haki, who remained on the shoreline, waited anxiously as the minutes passed. Just when he thought that there was no way a human being could hold his breath any longer bubbles formed on the surface, and he could see Åndeløs just under the water swimming for the shore.
Åndeløs swam until he could stand on the muddy bottom of the pond, and then he walked to the shoreline. When he neared the edge he threw the end of the rope to Haki and grinned.
" Boy ! Help me pull the monster out of the pond ! " he told Haki.
Haki, unsure of exactly what they were doing, began to pull as hard a he could on the rope. Although at first he could not see what was on the other end of the line, he knew that it was very heavy, and was resisting leaving the water. He also began to understand just how strong Åndeløs truly was as they both tugged on the rope. Despite his best efforts, it was the farm hand who was reeling in the underwater object with very little help from him.
Haki nearly dropped his end of the line when he saw the head of the horse emerge from the water, and he gasped in fright when it began to thrash back and forth against the tension on the rope. And when the great beast came closer to the shore and reared up on it's hind legs, it neighed angrily in protest, making Haki wet himself from the fear that gripped him like a vise. Åndeløs saw the terror in the boy's eyes and took over.
" Look out boy ! Stand aside ! I will bring the Bäckahäst on to land ! " he shouted as though he were enjoying every moment of the struggle.
And sure enough, and to Haki's astonishment, the farm hand slowly pulled the horse closer and closer to the edge of the pond. No matter how hard the great white horse tried to resist Åndeløs slowly dragged it onto the muddy bank of the pond. When he had the great stallion face to face, his eyes, the eyes of a powerful Nøkken, lit up like stars in the night, and the Water Spirit knew that it was futile to struggle any longer.
Sefa awoke to a sound that she had heard far too many times. A great disturbance was once again coming from the pond, and this time the cries for help did not sound human. Without bothering to put on slippers, or a robe, she ran out into the misty morning expecting to find the worst. Instead, what she saw stunned and relieved her at the same time. Haki was standing on the bank of the pond stroking the side of an immense white horse that was being held in place by Åndeløs. Realizing that her farmhand had somehow captured the Bäckahäst Sefa stopped running and began to slowly, and cautiously, approach them.
" What shall we name him Haki ? " Åndeløs asked with a broad smile upon his face.
Haki, still in somewhat of a state of shock, shrugged his shoulders.
" I don't know ! " he replied as he looked at the great white horse with awe.
" How about, ..... Vandykker, ......, Water Diver,.... Haki ? " he asked the boy.
Haki's eyes lit up.
" That would be a great name ! " he shouted happily.
Sefa stood by her son and looked him over from head to toe to make sure he was alright. When she saw that Haki had peed himself she shook her head and pointed to the house.
" Go and change your clothes ! Wetting yourself at your age,.... how embarrassing ! " she scolded him.
As Haki stomped backed to the house Sefa turned and asked Åndeløs a simple question :
" Now that you have captured the Brook Horse what do you plan to do with the monster ? " she asked.
Åndeløs patted the horse gently on the neck before replying :
" I am going to harness Vanndykker to a plow and finish cultivating the remaining fields ! " he told her with a grin.
As he was answering Sefa realized that Åndeløs was naked once again. As she stared at his manhood she felt a shiver build up inside of her. And judging from what she was seeing, he was feeling the same way !
