Odin's Eyes :
A Story Of Hugin And Munin
" Kill Those Damned Birds "
Hraesvelgr could feel the cool air of Jotunheim rush up to greet him as he approached the forever frozen world. He was glad to be away from the warmth and humidity that provided the growing environment for the great World Tree that held this part of the universe together. With every flap of his massive golden brown wings the world of the Frost Giants grew ever larger in his eyes. And as he felt the cold air chill him to the bone, he smiled inside.
The great eagle landed on the frozen steps that led up to the great ice hall. Unlike the great halls in Asgard or Vanaheim, that were made of fine marble, gold , and silver, and which were enclosed by walls and doors, this great ice palace was open to the raw elements. Massive ice columns held up a huge ice slab roof that covered the great structure, but all four sides were left open to the invigorating bitterly cold winds that the Frost Giants so very much enjoyed.
Hraesvelgr folded his massive wings and shape - shifted back into a Jotun form before entering the blue ice palace. As his eyes adjusted to the dim light he began to make out a figure at the other end of the great hall. As he came closer he recognized more clearly the figure seated upon the ice throne. It was the king of the Frost Giants, Farbauti, and it was he who Hraesvelgr had come to see.
The great blue Giant sat stroking his frosted beard as the visitor slowly came up the aisle towards him.
" It has been a very long time since I last saw you in your Jotun guise ! " Farbauti said suspiciously.
" Why has the great cosmic eagle left his post upon Heaven's End to come back to Jotunheim ? " he quickly asked before the Jotun had a chance to explain himself.
Before responding Hraesvelgr bowed his head slightly out of respect for the king of the Frost Giants.
Greetings great Farbauti ! I wish I could say that I am here in your great ice palace on a social call, but I am afraid that I have some very disturbing news to tell you my old friend ! " he told the king.
" My, that does sound ominous my friend ! " he replied with a concerned look upon his face.
Hraesvelgr walked up to the huge ice throne and leaned over a bit to whisper in Farbauti's ear.
" From my perch high atop the cosmos I have seen you building a settlement very close to the porthole that leads to Midgard. And I know that this " settlement " is not being constructed for habitation. I have seen your warriors storing weapons in what pretends to be a great hall, and I know that you are building up an army there to attack the Midgardians ! " he explained to the king.
Farbauti laughed and clapped his hands together.
" Bravo ! You have figured out my little scheme to infiltrate my warriors into Midgard, ...... but surely you did not leave your appointed post and fly all this way to tell me this...... did you ?! " Farbauti asked.
Hraesvelgr stared directly into the king's snow white eyes, and replied with a hint of anger.
" No ! I believe that Odin is also suspicious of your " settlement village ". Everyday he has been sending his eyes, Hugin and Munin, to the Jotunheim border to spy on the movements of the Frost Giants there. I think that the Valfather is close to finding out the truth about your intentions. " he explained to the king.
Farbauti smashed his right hand down hard on the frozen arm of the throne.
" Curse Odin ! And damn those black ravens of his !! " he screamed.
Then just as quickly as he had become infuriated Farbauti calmed down, and began to smile from ear to ear.
" We are going to kill those damned birds ! " he told Hraesvelgr as he stroked his frosted beard.
Hraesvelgr stepped away from the throne and frowned so hard that it made Farbauti laugh again.
" Oh, do not worry my old friend we Frost Giants will have them killed in such a way that it looks as though we were not involved at all ! " he replied to relieve the concerned look upon Hraesvelgr's face.
The Eagle - Giant stepped forward and stood directly in front of Farbauti.
" And how will you kill Odin's favorite pets without the Lord of Asgard knowing it was you who ordered their deaths ? " he asked.
Farbauti looked up at Hraesvelgr and grinned.
" Animals are killed and eaten by other animals every day my friend. Not even Odin's eyes are immune to the laws of nature, and the constant cycle of the predator and the prey. The strong always rule in the animal world ! " Farbauti explained.
Hraesvelgr's frown became even deeper.
" I will not risk the wrath of Odin by killing his faithful companions ! " he angrily informed the Frost Giant King.
Farbauti looked up at his shape changing friend and smiled.
" Nor would I ask you to ! If Odin found out that a huge eagle killed his pets he would know for sure that it was you my old friend. And in turn he would suspect that his old enemies the Frost Giants were behind the attacks. " Farbauti explained.
Hraesvelgr's frown furrowed even deeper into his forehead as he tried to understand what the King of Jotunheim was planning.
" Then how will you pull off this attack without Odin knowing it was our kind who planned it ? " Hraesvelgr asked.
Farbauti stood up and looked off into the distance with the wild eyes of a madman.
" From the cold misty realm of Niflheim to the very top of Yggdrasil, the Great World Tree, I have many friends ! " he said and then paused for a moment.
" Friends who owe me favors ! So do not concern yourself with the details of this matter, for I have many beasts in mind to do my evil bidding for me ! " Farbauti explained.
Then the Lord of the Jotuns began to laugh. So hard was his laughter that icicles began to break off all around them crashing down upon the floor of the ice palace. Concerned, Hraesvelgr slowly backed away until he had exited the ice palace. Once outside he transformed back into eagle form and flew away. As he left Jotunheim he could still hear Farbauti's maniacal laughter echoing through the ice cold mountains !
