Odin's Eyes :
A Story Of Hugin And Munin
" This Means War ! "
The great golden hall was emptied of Einherjar, and mead and ale placed on the golden tables for the Gods and Goddesses when they arrived. As Syn opened the heavy golden doors one by one they entered the hall. A Valkyrie then escorted each of the Asgardians to their assigned seats on the golden benches, and saw to their needs. Many wished to know why they had been summoned, but the Valkyries had given their word to Odin that they would not disclose the reason for the calling of such a hasty meeting of the Gods.
When all had arrived Odin and Frigga took their rightful places on their high - seats. Odin, who liked to heighten the importance of a given moment, allowed Hrist to pour him a goblet of ale before he addressed his fellow Asgardians. With the sounds of the Einherjar out in the courtyard practicing their battle craft in the background Odin finally spoke :
" I know that you are all wondering why I summoned you here on such short notice, but I assure you that it is for a very good reason. " he told his captive audience before taking a sip of his ale.
" This morning one of my ravens, Munin, returned to Asgard with an injured wing. My pet, it seems, was attacked by the serpents that suck on the roots of the great World Tree. This day, however, they were waiting in the upper branches of Yggdrasil to ambush my ravens ! " Odin told his fellow Asgardians with an angry flare.
A low murmur began to make its way around the great hall as the Gods began to talk among themselves about the ramifications of such an evil act. To take back the floor, and quiet the hall, Odin shouted :
" And this was not the first unprovoked attack, my friends ! Oh, no ! In an earlier attempt they were nearly killed by the harts, who tried to crush my pets in their antlers !! " he informed the Gods.
Then with fire in his eye Odin rose up off of his high - seat and shook his fist angrily in the air !
" And if not for Habrok, who I sent to protect my pets this time, I fear that both Hugin and Munin would now be lost to me ! " he stated, and then paused for effect.
" We all know that these evil creatures are one of many minions who are friendly with the Frost Giants ! " Valfather told the gathering with a slight snicker.
Odin then pointed his finger around the room at each of the Gods.
" And we also can be sure that these despicable creatures did not act on their own, now can't we ? " Odin asked.
The Gods and Goddesses all confirmed what the All - father was asking with a chorus of : " Yes ! Yes !! "
" If the Frost Giants want to kill my scouts, ...... well, ...... then they must have something to hide ! And if they mean to do us, or Midgard, harm there is only one reaction we can take, ...... this means WAR !! " he told the Gods with a dramatic hand gesture.
Thor stood up and held Mjolnir high over his head.
" Let us go to Jotunheim and kill all of the Frost Giants ! " the Thunder God bellowed.
The Gods all cheered Thor, and Tyr especially rose up and made a point to stand by the side of Odin's son. Valfather, however, walked back to his high - seat and sat back down.
Frigga, who had been very quiet up till this point, rose up and stepped forward.
" My fellow Asgardians ! I am afraid that you misunderstand my husband . This " war " is not to be fought between Asgardians and Frost Giants, but will instead be waged between their evil creatures, and our glorious , and faithful pets ! " the All - Mother explained to everyone with a slight grin.
By the time Frigga sat back down the inside of the great hall was so quiet you could have heard a pin drop. The only sound that could be heard at all was the dull sounds of sword and axe striking shields out in the courtyard. Such was the shock felt by all the Asgardians in attendance after hearing what Frigga had to say.
" Then why have you summoned us father ? " Thor asked impatiently.
Odin frowned at his son as he answered.
" Because from you I need Tanngrisner and Tanngnjoster ! " he replied.
Then Odin pointed to Balder.
" From Balder I need Habrok ! " he explained, and then pointed to Freyr and Freyja.
" From the Vanir Gods I will require the assistance of Gullinbursti, and Hlidisvini, ......., Oh ! ...... and your cats as well Freyja ! " Odin told the Fertility Gods.
Odin looked around the room until he found the War God.
" Tyr ! Can you lend me Fenrir ? " he asked.
Tyr lowered his head before shaking it from side to side negatively.
" No, my Lord ! " Fenrir is not here in Asgard at the moment. " the War God explained.
Odin looked disappointed, but continued :
" Well, it is of little importance. I will of course be sending out my ravens, as soon as Munin has recovered of course, and Geri and Freki too ! " he informed his fellow Gods and Goddesses.
Thor, not one afraid to be bold, walked up to the high - seats, and placed a foot up on the arm of Odin's chair. Looking not at his father, but at the golden wall beyond, he whispered to Odin and Frigga.
" Have you both gone mad ! ? A war between animals ! What nonsense is this ? ! " Thor demanded to know.
As Thor waited for an answer he did not notice that his half - brother Balder had come up beside him.
" There is great wisdom in their words Thor. We have lost so very many of our brothers and sisters in the Aesir - Vanir War, and the many Frost Giant Wars. Do we really want to see more perish over the killing of animals, even if they are valuable to us ? " Balder asked in a low voice so no one else could hear.
Thor lowered his eyebrows in a fierce frown before replying :
" I hear what you are saying brother,..... but a war between animals, ..... does that really make sense to you ? " Thor asked in return.
Odin answered for his shining son :
" It makes better sense than to risk my children in another all - out war ! " Valfather replied sternly.
Frigga smiled at both the son she so loved, and the one she could not help but resent. Then she rose up again and spoke one final time.
" Then it is decided ! We will release our animal friends on the creatures that dwell on the lower branches and roots of Yggdrasil. May the Norns weave a glorious victory for them ! " she exclaimed happily.
With a simple nod of her head Frigga exited the great hall, and left the Gods to work out the details for such an unusual plan. Balder did not watch his mother leave. He was intrigued by Thor's unusual expression, and could not help but smile at the bewildered look on his brother's face.
