Odin's Eyes :
A Story Of Hugin And Munin
The Forces Of Evil Respond
Farbauti was livid ! He could understand how the bumbling harts had failed in their attempt to kill the ravens, but the serpents had never let him down in the past. They were such efficient killers ! With no morals to restrain them they were some of the best assassins in all of the nine worlds. And yet Odin's black feathered spies still lived !
Worse yet, the king of the Frost Giants was now fairly certain that Odin knew that he was trying to kill his pets. And Odin would not allow this to pass without striking back. Revenge was not just Odin's creed, it was his passion !
" Well ! If Odin is going to send Habrok to defend his ravens, then I will send Vedrfolnir, and Hraesvelgr to counter them ! If the Lord of Asgard brings Geri and Freki, I will ask Hel to unleash Garm,.....and if that one eyed son of a bitch brings more I will send the great dragon Nidhoggr against them as well ! " he whispered to himself.
Farbauti immediately sent messengers to Niflheim and Nastrond, to let the mist dwellers know that he was coming. He then prepared to journey out to the " village" they were building at the very edge of Jotunheim. Farbauti was sure that Odin now knew that he was behind the assassination attempts on Hugin and Munin, and he now feared that Asgard's Lord also suspected that it was because his pets were spying on their new outpost.
" But does he know that the village is a weapon's depot ? Or that soon, very soon, we are going to launch an attack through the porthole that is located near the village against Midgard ? " Farbauti asked himself out loud.
Then Farbauti had a sickening thought.
" Did Odin know the name that he had given to the village? "
The Lord of the Frost Giants grinned from ear to ear when he whispered its name :
" Revenge ! "
While riding his great grey wolf Farbauti kept an eye on the skies all the way to Revenge. His spirits were lifted by the fact that he did not see those damned black birds circling overhead, or hiding in the trees. If the attacks did not accomplish his main goal of killing Odin's ravens, they did serve to keep Hugin and Munin out of Jotunheim for a little while.
Farbauti pulled hard on the reins of his wolf as he came upon the twin great halls in the center of the village of Revenge. These " great halls " were actually not halls at all. They were living quarters to house the ever growing multitude of warriors who were being steadily slipped into Revenge. Every day, for months now , three or four warriors, disguised as settlers, and with their families in tow, arrived at the village to add to his growing army. From the air all those nosy ravens could see were families moving out to the frontier from the overcrowded ice cities. At least that was all Farbauti hoped they could see.
Alsvart, the commander of the post, jumped up from his ice bench when he realized who it was that had just entered the barracks.
" My Lord ! Why did you not send a messenger ahead to tell me you were coming ? " he asked.
Without waiting for as answer he added :
" I would have had a few of the Midgardian oxen that you enjoy so much slaughtered for you to feast on ! "
Farbauti stared at his commander with a determined, and very stern look upon his face.
" There is no time for such frivolity ! " The Frost Giant king replied sharply.
" Our friends the harts and the serpents have both failed in their attacks upon our black enemies, and I fear that Odin will soon discover our plans ! I have come here to see if we can move the timetable forward, and make the attack much sooner than originally planned. We must move quickly or the moment of surprise will be lost to us ! " Farbauti informed his subordinate.
Alsvart smiled confidently.
" We are well stocked in weapons, my lord, but I must report that not all of the warriors have arrived at this point. Bringing them in a few at a time is a great deception, but it has left us slightly undermanned for a full scale attack. " he told his king respectfully.
Farbauti stroked his frozen beard, and then gently patted his commander on the shoulder.
" The time for deception is over my friend ! We must now prepare ourselves for war ! " he explained to Alsvart.
Alsvart nodded his approval.
" I will order up the rest of our warriors immediately my lord ! " Alsvart informed the Frost Giant king.
As Farbauti inspected the installation he was very pleased with the preparations that Alsvart had made for the attack. Food and ice stores were plentiful, his warriors were well trained and disciplined, and if anything negative could be said about Alsvart, it was that he had stockpiled too many weapons. Many more than could possibly be used in the coming attack.
After congratulating Alsvart, and his warriors for a fine effort, Farbauti hopped back on his great wolf, and left Revenge. The King of the Frost Giants would not be returning to Jotunheim just yet however. He kicked his wolf hard around, spurred it on, and headed down to the deepest roots of Yggdrasil which held a tight grip on the realm of Niflheim to see an old friend.
Farbauti reined in his wolf to a slow walk as he approached Hel's great hall Eljudnir, for he could not believe his eyes, or his luck ! Standing outside of the misty hall was Hel herself, ..... ,and on one side she held on a leash the " best of hounds", Garm, while on the other was the great wolf Fenrir !
" How have you come to be taking care of Fenrir ? " Farbauti asked with a grin.
Hel smiled, a dead smile, and answered the Frost Giant :
" Not only has Odin thrown my brother Jormungandr into the depths of Midgard's oceans, but now the Lord of Asgard is trying to restrict Fenrir's movements by binding its legs. So far they have failed, but Tyr, who has been taking care of my brother, allowed Fenrir to came and stay with me for a while. " she told Farbauti with a voice that lacked any change in tone.
Farbauti grinned from ear to ear. Although not yet fully grown, Fenrir was still a force to be reckoned with. The great wolf would add nicely to his growing little animal army.
" Well ! That was a huge mistake on his part, now wasn't it ?! " he replied before breaking into maniacal laughter.
