Skadhi : Allegiances
The Prosecution Attacks
Walking slowly up to the front of the court was a Jotun she had heard so very much about. Although she had never seen him Odin had described him in great detail, and this Jotun matched that description perfectly. Odin had spoken to her many times about this very wise Jotun, and now he was standing across from her ready to press the charges for the prosecution. The distinguished Jotun who stood stoically before Hrym was none other than Vafthrudnir himself. Odin had said that he was one of the few from any race who could match his wits, and Odin had only beaten him by asking a trick question at the end of the contest. The contest was supposed to be to the death, but Odin could not bring himself to kill someone with so much wisdom, and let him live. Syn took a deep breath and gave Vafthrudnir a nod of acknowledgement, which the noble Jotun returned respectfully.
Vafthrudnir wasted no time in turning the trial, not only into an indictment of Skadhi' s actions, but also a condemnation of the entire race of Gods known as the Aesir and Vanir. " Today I stand here as the humble representative of the entire race of Jotuns that has been inflicted by millennium after millennium of genocide, and the rape of our women, by a race of " Gods " so despicable that words horrible enough to describe them escape me at the moment. Skadhi is just the tip of the iceberg ! It is what lies below the surface, that will sink our ancient race ! " Vafthrudnir bellowed. The Jotun prosecutor then turned around in a rather theatrical motion, and said in a loud and accusing tone : " And what lurks in the depths below that berg my friends are the ones known as Thor, Odin and Freyr ! " The Jotuns immediately erupted into shouts and curses all directed at the defense team. This time, however, Hrym did not use his gavel to quiet them, but allowed their anger to ring out in the hall until it subsided on its own.
Syn saw at once what was happening ! This trial was nothing more than a sham to hide the true purpose of these proceedings. And that purpose was war ! The conviction of Skadhi was just the apparatus to gain that end. Syn sought out Ullr and motioned to him to come over to the defense table. Ullr came over without delay, and was forced to bend down when Syn grabbed his shirt and pulled with all her might to make Ullr low enough to speak into his ear. Over the noise in the judgement hall she yelled into his ear : " Get Grid, Gerd, Idunn, and all the other witnesses out of here now ! When the verdict is announced I will be able to escape quickly on Sleipnir, but they need to leave now ! " Ullr sensing the danger did as he was told.
When the unruly mob quieted down Vafthrudnir began his prepared speech : " Where shall we begin ? Let us start at the beginning shall we my Jotun brothers and sisters. Let me once again tell the tale of three uncaring, and unfeeling brothers, who killed without cause the first of our race, the great Ymir. Then his body was desecrated, carved up, and used to create the world of Midgard. They even used his blood, OUR ANCESTOR'S BLOOD, to fill Midgard's oceans and lakes ! Then these three butchers took two trees and breathed life into them and gave them the lands made from Ymir's body. Jotuns are not even allowed to live in this land made from Ymir's body, and have been murdered every time we try to take back what is rightfully ours ! I cannot even think of a way to quantify such an enormous insult against our ancient people ! " Vafthrudnir shouted in indignation.
Vafthrudnir then paused as though the subject of this discussion made him weary . The Jotun counselor took a deep breath, and then shook his head in disgust as he continued : " My friends this pattern of genocide is unfortunately not ancient history, but echoes forward to the present day. Do I even need to bring up all the tragic deaths that have been caused by Thor ? Well, lets see..... there was Leikn, Thrivaldi, Hrungnir, Thrym, Geirrod, Gjalp, and her sister Greip. Oh, and that master builder who's name escapes me at the moment, who was building the wall around Asgard. Thor has little respect for other races as well my friends ! I recently heard that he killed a Dwarve named Alvis for asking for his daughter's hand in marriage. How despicable my friends is that ?! " Vafthrudnir shouted to his Jotun audience. Once again the court became a mess with every Jotun trying to yell louder than the one next to them.
Vafthrudnir smiled as he saw that his words were bringing the courtroom to a frenzy. The old wise counselor was feeding them what they wanted hear, and there anger was growing with every word he spoke. When they quieted down to a mild roar he continued. " The old adage like father, like son, is applicable with this family. Odin not only kills our people, but cheats, steals, and beds are women as well ! " Vafthrudnir stated angrily. Then in a very dramatic act Vafthrudnir walked a short distance over to Baugi, and put his arm around Baugi. " Poor Baugi here befriended Odin, who of course was disguised as a man named Bolverk, and tricked him into helping him steal the Mead of Poetry. Odin....oh, sorry.... Bolverk , after he stole the mead flew away like a coward, narrowly escaping back into Asgard with Suttung in close pursuit ! " Then Vafthrudnir pointed at Billingr " Look over there ! There is Billingr, who is well liked and respected here in Jotunheim. Well Odin disrespected him by trying to bed his daughter ! This taking of our women seems to be almost a sport for Odin ! " Vafthrudnir said in a sad tone. " Odin may not kill as often as his prolific son, but we all remember how Odin killed poor Sokkmimir. ! And now with the addition of the Vanir they have added a new killer to their ranks. His name is Freyr, and as we all know he recently killed Beli, with of all things a set of antlers ! " Vafthrudnir cried out.
This time Vafthrudnir was impatient as the Jotuns screamed out their hatred of the Gods, and he held up his hands to quiet them. Hrym belatedly pounded his stone gavel as well. Vafthrudnir then turned and faced Hrym, and spoke directly to the court judge. " That is why we can no longer accept what Skadhi has done to dishonor our race ! We need to not only break off the tip of this offensive Aesir " iceberg" that floats menacingly in our world, but we need to extract the entire berg, and destroy it forever so it can do us no more harm ! " Vafthrudnir stated loudly. Vafthrudmir paused, wiped his forehead with a rag, and then pointing directly at Hrym, shouted : " Skadhi should..... no MUST, be found guilty of crimes against the Jotun race, and she MUST be brought back to Jotunberg to pay for what she has done ! " Vafthrudnir demanded. The old counselor then bowed his head in respect and said : " I rest my case, and await your fair, and swift verdict so that justice can be served ! "
Hrym wasted no time. He pounded his gavel over and over until the Jotuns, who were now getting out of control, calmed down to the point where he could speak. In a clear calm voice Hrym told the court : " I, Hrym of Jotunheim, presiding over this criminal court find Skadhi guilty of all charges, and order her immediate arrest ! "
The court room went wild as the Jotuns celebrated the guilty verdict ! Syn who had started to edge her way out of the hall never had a chance to reach Sleipnir. She was quickly surrounded by a large and angry mob of Jotuns out for blood. Then Vafthrudnir did something quite unexpected . He motioned to Hrym to bang his gavel, which when it crashed down immediately stopped everyone in their tracks. Vafthrudnir walked over to the high seat, and said in a tone loud enough for all to hear : " Hrym this is a court of justice, not a place of execution. My colleague Syn is not on trial here, and she should be allowed to leave without being harmed." Hrym was caught off guard by Vafthrudnir' s words, and before he had time to really think about the situation Hrym declared : " Unhand her ! Let her go ! "
Syn gathered her things and walked out of the great hall as quickly as she could. She mounted Sleipnir in one leap, and rode as fast as Odin's horse would fly. As she turned around to take one last look at the hall she had narrowly escaped from, it slowly disappeared . The Jotuns no longer had a use for the court room so Utgard - Loki allowed his vision of it to disappear.
