Skadhi : Allegiances
The Struggle Begins
She was relieved of her worst fears when Swift - Runner returned to Thrymheim to report what he had seen while shadowing the Jotun army. There was no Loki, Surtr, or Utgard - Loki among the many warriors who were fast approaching. She became alarmed, however, when the big wolf told her who led the great Jotun army. For it was not Hrym as she thought. It was one of the strongest and meanest of all Jotuns, Hyrrokkin. This ferocious Giantess was known throughout the nine worlds not only for her immense strength, but also for the horrible beast that she rode upon. The great beast had no name, but all who knew of it simply called it " Death " !
As the mist of the morning burned off, Hyrrokkin could see the great hall of Thrymheim off in the distance. Riding upon her great wolf - beast she felt supremely confident with their chances of destroying the Gods. A feeling that was not entirely shared by Hrym. " How do we avoid all the defensive traps around Thrymheim my friend ? " he asked of Hyrrokkin. " If we try to attack Thrymheim, to get at the Gods beyond, we will be cut to pieces in much the same way that Herkir' s forces were destroyed ! " Hrym added. Hyrrokkin shook her head in disgust. " You think like a villager Hrym ! " Luckily I am a mountain woman like Skadhi.........and I have a plan. " she said with a devious smile.
Hrym stepped back a few steps as Hyrrokkin dismounted from her wolf. Hyrrokkin laughed as she instructed her wolf - beast to run back and forth in front of the hall, slowly getting closer with each pass. As the great beast took off Hrym gave Hyrrokkin a questioning look, which the Giantess chuckled at. " Watch my friend . And learn ! " She shouted. As the great beast ran from side to side in front of the great hall, every animal. big and small, that was hiding there made a run for the hall to avoid the gaping jaws of the slobbering wolf. Deer, rabbits, elk, squirrels, fox, and even a bear or two, ran towards the great hall. And right into the traps !
Skadhi, and her allies, looked on in horror as their traps were sprung one by one. Not by the Jotuns as she had planned, but by the animals that she so dearly loved. She was saddened, and greatly angered, by their feeble, desperate cries for help, and their moans as their lives slowly slipped away into the darkness of death. A few moments later, rising out the mist, could be seen the Jotun army. Leading them, as Swift - Runner had told Skadhi, was Hyrrokkin riding her horrible beast ! The great wolf could be heard growling over the pathetic cries of the dying animals, as saliva poured from its mouth and dripped from its razor sharp teeth. The battle lines had been set. In front of Thrymheim stood the allied warriors : Skadhi, Ullr, Bragi, Odin, Thor, Tyr, Balder, Njord, Freyja, Freyr, Sif, Forseti, Heimdall, Odr, Hermod, Gefjon, Thrud, Magni, Modi, Vidar, Aurvandil, Groa, Grid, and Gymir. Opposing them were the Jotun forces lead by Hyrrokkin : Byleist, Angrboda, Thurbord, Hrimnir, Kari, Flegg, Baugi, Hrym, Suttung, Hastigi, Beinvid, Vandil, Forad, Grimnir, Thrasir, Logi, Hrimthurs, Berfinnr, Gyllir, Vornir, Hrimgrimnir, Fyrnir, Hraesvelger, Modgud, Hellblindi, and Hardgreip. Gods and Jotuns alike all were prepared to die this day !
Both sides stood watching each other as if they were for a moment frozen in time. Hyrrokkin then smiled across the battlefield at Skadhi, and gave her a nod. Skadhi returned the courtesy, but she was not smiling. Hyrrokkin then raised her hand into the air and screamed : " Kill them ! Kill them All ! " Skadhi and Ullr set their arrows on their bowstrings and waited for them to come within range. Thor's eyes glowed red in anticipation, while Tyr began to laugh out of his pure love of battle. The war was about to begin !
