Surtr : The Great Fire Giant
The Guardian Of The Frontier
The Fire Giants of the south rejoiced when their new king marched through their towns and villages. King Eldur made a short speech at every village and promised that Muspelheim, a united Muspelheim, had now entered a new era of peace and tranquility. To help heal the old wounds caused by the conflict King Eldur elevated several of the southern warriors, who had surrendered, to command small divisions in the new Muspelheim Army. There was, however, no enemy left for them to fight.
The old antagonists of the Fire Giants, the Frost Giants, saw King Eldur' s pledge of peace as a sign of weakness, and began once again to encroach upon the frontiers of Muspelheim. King Eldur was about to send the entire army to deal with the problem when Surtr stopped his father.
" You do not need to send an army to accomplish what I can do with the raising of a single sword ! " Surtr told his father confidently.
Surtr returned from the frontier a few days later and informed his father that the Frost Giant problem had been taken care of. Pleased by how well his son had handled the Frost Giant problem Eldur sat his son down and spoke to him.
" Surtr, my son, you are the true ruler of Muspelheim. It was by the mighty power of Muspell' s flaming sword that the Southern Army was defeated, and not by my comparatively feeble actions. Therefore, I will hand the kingdom over to you, effective immediately. " he told his son proudly.
Surtr shook his head from side to side, and smiled at his father.
" I was given this sword to protect these most ancient lands father, not to rule over them. I have shown myself to be a great Fire Giant of war, but more importantly father, you have proved to all that you have the strength to sheath your sword in a time of peace . It is you who must rule Muspelheim ! " he told his father in no uncertain terms.
Eldur looked at his son and nodded.
" I understand Surtr. " he replied. " What will you do now son ? " Eldur asked.
Surtr smiled and pointed off in the distance where Sinmara, and his mother Brenna, were standing.
" I, along with my consort, will act as Muspelheim's sentinels. With Sinmara by my side, and my flaming sword in hand, I will patrol our borders against our enemies, and forever act as the guardian of our frontiers ! " he told his father.
Sinmara saw Surtr pointing in her direction and waved to the Fire Giant that she loved.
Surtr returned her wave, then turned to his father.
" It is time for me to leave. I wish you well, Eldur, King of Muspelheim ! " he told his father.
Surtr was about to shake his father's hand when Eldur put his arms around his son and gave him a hug.
" Be strong and let no one enter my kingdom who does not belong ! " the king told his son.
Eldur then pushed his son away and grinned.
" Give your mother a kiss before you leave, ...... ,or I will never hear the end of it ! " Eldur ordered his son with a grin.
As Surtr walked away Eldur whispered softly under his breath. " I am so very proud of you my son ! "
