The Dark Witch
The townspeople mysteriously forgot about the dark witch, and the army of the dead. Hella and her mother returned to their farmstead, and with the help of neighbors, who felt sorry for Hildigunn for losing her husband in the fire, rebuilt their home. The village church was also rebuilt by the local residents. Strangely, the new priest, a quiet man named Viglund, never went out to Hildigunn's farm to try and convert them.
When Hella turned nineteen she met a farmer's son named Rolf Eilivsson, and later that same year they were bound in matrimony. They lived and worked on the old farmstead with her mother, and did quite well for themselves.
The very next year Hella became pregnant, which made the couple very happy ! Hildigunn was also very happy for her daughter and her husband, but in the back of her mind she could not wipe away the memory of those red eyes, with the dead black pupils. She was concerned that her grandchild might possess the same powers that her daughter did when Hella was a young child.
On the day that Hella went into labor, Hildigunn acted as midwife, while Rolf paced back and forth nervously outside. As the baby emerged from its exhausted mother, Hildigunn held it up by its feet, and gently slapped it on its bottom to clear its throat of any mucous. When Hildigunn did not hear the child cry she quickly spun the baby around. But to Hildigunn' s great relief the child did begin to cry. Whether out of curiosity, or fear, Hildigunn first looked at the child's genitals, and then announced quietly.
" It is a girl ! " she told her half conscious daughter happily.
Then with shaking hands and trembling lips she looked at the child's face. She was glad to see that the child was of a normal color, and seemed to be breathing comfortably on its own. When it fluttered its eyes, however, Hildigunn gasped, and held the child away at arm's length. In what seemed to be an eternity the child slowly opened its eyes. She almost began to cry when she saw the child's white eyes, with the pretty green pupils.
Hildigunn breathed a sigh of relief as she reached for the knife to cut the umbilical cord. When she turned back around the child smiled at her, and reached out and touched her nose.
" Hello grandmother ! " the child said with a little giggle.
Hildigunn began to shake so violently that she dropped the knife, set the child back onto the bed next to her daughter, and stepped away. It was then that she noticed that within the child's green pupils their was a power swirling around and around.
" What is wrong mother ! " Hella asked in a terrified tone.
Hildigunn felt a cold shiver run up her spine as she slowly answered.
" Apparently a witch's powers do not skip a generation ! " she told her daughter through trembling lips.
The baby smiled, and clapped her hands. With an inquisitive turn of her head the baby reached out for the knife, and held it up in front of her eyes. The newborn giggled as it cut its own umbilical cord.
Odin sat upon Hlidskjalf, and watched the entire birth of Hella's child. When he saw the child cutting its own umbilical cord he shook his head and looked over at Hermod.
" Bring Haakon to me at once ! " he commanded angrily.
