The Fire Dragon's Quest
( Part Three Of The Ítreksjóð Trilogy )
Odin's Wrath !
Thor and Ítreksjóð did not hear, nor did they see Odin, as he landed Sleipnir on Midgard's firm ground at a full gallop. Despite his age, and having the use of only one eye, the Lord of Asgard dismounted from his great eight - legged horse before it had come to a full stop. Odin ran forward a few steps before pausing to watch his sons battle for a few moments. When he had seen enough he shouted at them angrily.
" What nonsense is this !? I command you both to stop immediately !! "
The son's of Odin were too fixated on their personal battle to pay any attention to the father who had sired both of them. As they continued to do battle, Thor with his brute strength and his hammer, and Ítreksjóð with his mighty tail, huge teeth, mighty jaws, and fiery breath, Odin became angrier and angrier, until he could take it no more !
" You will stop NOW !!! " Odin screamed at the top of his lungs.
When the All - Father realized that his words alone would not be enough the he struck the ground with Gungnir and pointed it at the dueling brothers.
A great flash of light, and power, drawn from the magnetic molten core of Midgard, blasted out of the triple bladed spear and struck his sons like a tidal wave. Thor was thrown a hundred yards to the left, while Ítreksjóð was picked up and tossed an equal distance to the right by the great force.
" When children do not listen they must be punished !! " Odin screamed at his boys in a fit of rage.
Thor was the first to recover from the stupor caused by an energy that not even Mjolnir could stop.
" But father !.... The Dragon God,..... your son,... has invaded Midgard, and caused unrest among my children ! " he told his father angrily.
Ítreksjóð, though still dazed by Odin's mighty wrath, quickly responded to Thor's accusations.
" I have come here merely to retrieve the gold coin that belongs to me ! " he replied angrily.
Odin slammed Gungnir into the ground again, but did not direct it's power at either son this time. As the blast spread harmlessly across the East Agder skies, the All - Father pointed first at Thor and then to Ítreksjóð.
" These ' children ' here in Midgard are mine ! My brothers and I created them from two trees we found on a beach. We gave them life, form, and a mind so they could think for themselves. The descendants of Ask and Embla are my children, and not yours ! " he sternly corrected the Thunder God.
" And that one insignificant coin that you are tearing apart the nine worlds to find is not yours either Ítreksjóð ! As with everything in Asgard it belongs to me, and I decide who I will share it with, and who I will deny it to ! " he screamed at his dragon son, who had transformed back into God - form.
Odin then spun around and looked at King Rolleifr with a cold stare that would have made most mortals tremble.
" And you, King of East Agder ! You made a deal with Loki which I now mark as null and void ! " he shouted at the human.
Confident that the sword would protect him, King Rolleifr dismounted from his horse, unsheathed his cursed weapon, and strode defiantly across from Odin.
" I have paid good money for this sword. It is mine and I will not part with it ! " he told Odin sternly.
Odin's eye opened to twice it's normal size as he stood for a moment staring in disbelief at King Rolleifr.
" You dare to defy the Lord of Asgard !? " he spit out in an incredulous tone.
King Rolleifr took another step forward, and showed Odin the sword.
" I will defend with my life that which I have bought and paid for ! " he yelled back defiantly.
Odin held his hand out in front of him, and with the will of an all - powerful God, used a cosmic force to rip the sword from the human's hand. End over end the sword came spinning toward the Lord of Asgard. Then, with a dexterity that amazed everyone who witnessed it, Odin grabbed the sword by it's hilt in mid- flight.
" You will have only that which I say you can have ! " Odin corrected the Midgardian king.
Furious over the loss of his sword King Rolleifr pointed his finger menacingly at the Asgardian Lord.
" You bastard ! You will pay for stealing my sword ! " he screamed at Odin despite the pleading of his sons to stop.
Odin is a tolerant, and forgiving God, but this mortal's bravado had pushed him too far ! With his left hand he threw the sword back at the mortal with such speed that the blade whistled as it cut through the air. So fast, in fact, that King Rolleifr did not have time to move out of it's path. With a sickening thud the blade penetrated his chest all the way up to the hilt, as Rolleifr cried out in pain.
As the king fell to his knees Odin once again commanded the cosmic energy to return to his hand the now bloodied sword. Rolleifr screamed a second time as the blade ripped out of his chest with a great sucking sound. When the bloodied sword was safely back in his hand Odin spoke to the king's sons.
" Uggi ! Toki ! Take your army back home, and once there, bury your father well in East Agder soil. Before today Rolleifr never disobeyed me, and he was always faithful to the Gods. " he told the sons of Rolleifr.
As the East Agder army began to march back home King Nefgeirr came on to the meadow leading his West Agder army. Odin held up the still dripping sword to show Nefgeirr what happened to those who disobeyed him.
" Take your army and go home ! King Rolleifr is dead by my hand, and there is no longer a need for war ! " he told the king sternly.
King Nefgeirr, unlike his counterpart, understood Odin's message all too well. The All - Father was telling him to leave or else. From his great brown steed Nefgeirr bowed to Odin.
" Then we will be leaving, my Lord ! " he replied before reining his horse around and ordering his army back to West Agder.
When both armies had left the meadow Odin strolled over to his sons.
" I am very disappointed in both of you ! " he scolded them.
Odin's sons hung their heads low and nodded to their father. Then the All - Father held up the sword and ripped the coin out of the hilt with his bare hand. He threw the bloody sword to Ítreksjóð, and waggled his finger at him.
" You will take this sword instead of the new one that Durinn promised that his Earth Dwarves would make you ! " he told the Dragon God.
As Ítreksjóð wiped the blood off of the blade in the grass, he looked up at Odin.
" And the coin ? " he asked.
Thor shook his head in disbelief.
" Hasn't that coin caused enough trouble ?! " he asked his step - brother.
Before Ítreksjóð could answer, Odin answered the Dragon God's question.
" I have a very special place where I would like to place this coin. " he told his sons.
" And I would like both of my boys to help me put it there ! " he added with a grin.
