The Fire Dragon's Quest
( Part Three Of The Ítreksjóð Trilogy )
Ítreksjóð Confronts Durinn
" That is a sight I do not think that I will ever get use to seeing. Our uncle,... Ítreksjóð the dragon ! " he told his brother with a hint of disbelief.
Magni, unlike Modi, could see past the fact that that their uncle, the Dragon God, was flying in the skies of Svartalfheim, and asked an important question that needed to be answered.
" Farbauti and now Ítreksjóð,... why are so many high level beings coming here to see a Dwarf leader of such little consequence ? " he asked.
Modi scratched his chin as he tried to think of an explanation. When something suddenly came to mind his eyes opened wide, and a smile came over his face.
" Possibly they have come to see how Durinn is healing from his wounds ! " he replied as if he had just unlocked the secrets of the cosmos.
Magni shook his head slowly from side to side as a deep frown furrowed his forehead.
" Or maybe we should simply ask Ítreksjóð when he arrives ! " Magni put forth sarcastically.
Magni and Modi, strong Gods in their own rights, had to brace themselves as the Great Dragon Lord flapped his mighty wings vigorously to land on the rock ledge at the front of the cave entrance. When the great protector of Asgard's treasure had all four of it's feet solidly on the ground, and the dust and debris had settled, a great light emanated from the dragon as it slowly transformed into the more familiar form of a God of Asgard.
" Hello Uncle ! What brings you here to Svartalfheim ! ? " Modi asked impetuously.
Ítreksjóð looked at Thor's sons with only passing interest.
" I am here to see Durinn. " he quickly replied.
Magni could tell that Ítreksjóð was avoiding disclosing the precise reason for his visit, and decided to push for an answer.
" Grandfather commanded us to come here to guard the entrance to the Earth Dwarve's domain. We have a right to know what you wish to see Durinn about. " he told Ítreksjóð in a friendly, but firm tone.
The Dragon Lord glanced over at the mutilated wolf, and then quickly turned his angry stare back to Magni.
" And did you demand to know exactly why The king of the Jotuns wished to see Durinn ? " he asked in return.
Magni was not one who was easily intimidated, but the question caught the mighty one off guard, and he stammered as he struggled to answer.
" Well, ..... not exactly,.... you see we were surprised that Farbauti would come here,..."
Ítreksjóð cut him off before he could finish his lie.
" I thought not ! " he said angrily as he pushed past the sons of Thor.
Before disappearing down into the darkness of the tunnel Ítreksjóð called back to them :
" And you had better bury that wolf or it will begin to stink, and draw thousands of flies ! " he suggested loudly.
Modi looked over at his brother and scratched his head.
" Well, he is right about the wolf. We should get rid of it. " he said in agreement with his uncle.
Magni, who was in no mood to hear his brother's nonsense, walked over to the wolf grabbed hold of it's legs and lifted it over his head. With a giant lunge forward he threw it over the cliff and down into the valley below. Magni spoke no more that day.
As Ítreksjóð approached the settlement of the Earth Dwarves he transformed back into a dragon. He had not come here on a social call, and the great Dragon Lord wanted the leader of these Dwarves to not only know of his great displeasure, but to also see his anger in dragon form.
To emphasize his rage Ítreksjóð roared loudly and spewed forth a jet of flame that reached all the way up to the ceiling of the great cavern. The blast was so loud that it echoed throughout each corridor of every tunnel in their labyrinth, and was even heard by Motsognir down in his sacred chamber.
The Wise One shook his head and took a deep breath before whispering to himself :
" What kind of trouble has Durinn gotten himself into now ! "
Moments later the Dwarves all came out of their rock homes to see exactly what was happening. Durinn was one of the last to emerge. He was neither alarmed, nor was he surprised by the great dragon's presence. For the leader of the Earth Dwarves knew why the Asgardian fire breather had come. As he stared at the long face of the dragon he pretended to be startled by Ítreksjóð's sudden appearance.
" Why have you come to Svartalfheim ? And why are you carrying on so !? " he asked the angry dragon.
Ítreksjóð looked at the little Dwarf closely before spewing forth another column of flames just over the top of the village as a threat. When the blinding light had died down Ítreksjóð lowered his head and put his long snout against the Dwarve's chest, and stared into Durinn's black eyes angrily.
" You know why I am here little creature ! You have something of mine, and I want it back ! " he hissed at the Dwarf.
Durinn managed to fake a smile at the dragon despite the fact that it's yellow - gold eyes seemed to cut right through his soul.
" Oh ! The coin ! Yes,... well,... Farbauti was just here and demanded it as payment for the deaths of his Frost Giants. If you wish it back I am afraid you will have to fly to Jotunheim to retrieve your property . " he explained as calmly as he could to the Dragon Lord.
Ítreksjóð furrowed his brows and raised his great snout in the air. As he sniffed in every direction, with his sensitive nose, he could not detect the burnt odor of his breath that had forever cursed the golden coin. With a burst of frustration and fury the great Dragon God spewed forth a huge ball of fire that lit the tunnels for miles around. When his anger died down, and the flames dissipated, he once again spoke to the little Dwarf.
" If you are lying to me little one, I will be back ! And my fury will be a hundred times as great next time !! " he informed Durinn angrily.
As the dragon disappeared into the dark tunnel that led to the surface Durinn felt himself become dizzy. The little Dwarf, overcome with fear, passed out where he had stood. Ivaldi and Eitri ran over to where Durinn lay unconscious on the ground, and knelt down to try and revive their leader.
" Is he sick ?! " Eitri asked Ivaldi the Elder.
Ivaldi shook his head,
" No. Just scared to death . " he replied.
