The Fire Dragon's Quest
( Part Three Of The Ítreksjóð Trilogy )
Son Against Son !
" Never has any human being had so much power to wield ! " he told the king with a knowing nod.
Rolleifr took the sword from the Jotun, but he was not impressed by Loki's assessment of the sword's ability as a weapon.
" We shall see ! " he told the trickster with a bit of skepticism.
King Rolleifr turned and yelled to his guards :
" Bring the prisoner out, .... the one called Ormarr, ... and arm him with a shield and a sword ! " he commanded.
Moments later a terrified looking man emerged from the hall. A shield was shoved into the man's chest by one guard, while another handed the trembling man a sword. The guards then grabbed the captured West Agder man under the arms and carried him over to the king where they dropped him.
" I am going to give you the opportunity of a lifetime. A chance to kill the king of East Agder ! " he told the warrior with a laugh.
Ormarr tried to act brave, but he could not maintain the illusion for very long.
" My Lord ! I was forced to fight for King Nefgeirr. I have no quarrel with you, or your people. I am but a simple farmer ! " he pleaded.
King Rolleifr could not help but be disgusted by such a coward. The king ignored the prisoner's blubbering, and checked the balance of his new sword, which he found to be superb.
" You are going to die either way, so you might as well defend yourself. " the king informed the prisoner.
When Ormarr reluctantly raised his sword, and pushed his shield out in front of him, Rolleifr readied himself for battle. The prisoner took the first jab, clumsily missing the king altogether.
" Is that the best you can do, you little coward ! ? " the king yelled at his opponent.
Ormarr finally decided that if he was going to die anyway he might as well try to put up a decent fight. In a wild fit of rage the West Agder prisoner hacked and jabbed at the king. But Despite his opponent being without a shield the king blocked every move he made with practiced ease.
Ormarr stepped back for a moment to rest, for he was already sweating profusely, and his strength was beginning to weaken. It was then that the king struck. Ormarr saw the sword coming down upon him and in his mind he had gotten both his sword and his shield up in time to block the blow. It was the last thought he ever had.
King Rolleifr could not believe what he had just witnessed. His weapon, the cursed sword made by the Dwarves, cut right through the shield and the sword of his opponent, and then cleaved the man's head in two ! As he pulled his blade out of the man's head it made a sickening sound.
" Now that is a mighty sword ! " he told Loki as he wiped the man's brains off of his weapon.
Loki grinned from ear to ear.
" You seem to be satisfied with your weapon, so I believe that I will be going ! " he told the king.
After Loki left in a flash of light King Rolleifr commanded his son's Uggi and Toki to gather up his army and get it ready to move at first light.
" Tomorrow I will kill the West Agder king and unite our kingdoms,... and then,....well,.... who knows,.... maybe Vestfold, Viken, Ranrike, or Varmland,..... or maybe all of them !! " he shouted with a maniacal look in his eyes.
Frigga, who was standing over her husband's shoulder, looking down into Midgard from Hlidskjalf, smacked her lips in disgust.
" I do not like King Nefgeirr, but I do not wish to win our little game this way ! " she told Odin.
Odin looked up at his wife and nodded.
" I agree ! Loki has made this an unfair fight, and it must be stopped ! " he replied angrily.
Frigga kissed her husband on the neck and whispered into his ear.
" And how will my husband stop a human with a magical sword ? " she asked.
" I will do nothing. " he informed Frigga.
Frigga walked around the great high - seat and looked her husband in the eye.
" And how will nothing stop a war ? ! " she asked with a hint of disappointment in her voice.
Odin laughed !
" Because, my dear, nothing has a name. And that name is Ítreksjóð ! " he explained to her.
Ítreksjóð was furious ! He had gone to Svartalfheim, then to Jotunheim, and now he was on his way to Midgard seeking that which was his. As he flew over the Rainbow Bridge, which ended in the mist of the Gullfoss falls in Iceland, he dipped a wing and headed east for the cold northern lands of Scandinavia. With every breath he could smell the cursed coin that had driven him to near madness since it's disappearance. Now that he was so near to regaining it he could think of nothing but revenge !
The Dragon God was so focused on his quest that he did not realize that he was not alone in the skies over Midgard. Riding in his great goat pulled chariot Thor was keeping a close eye on Ítreksjóð, while remaining hidden in the thick white clouds above the dragon. Even had Ítreksjóð known of Thor's presence it would not have stopped the dragon from seeking to avenge the loss of his property.
King Rolleifr was leading his army across an open meadow when a shadow, that came from behind them, blocked out the sun for a moment. As it passed overhead the king's men ducked instinctively, despite the dragon being hundreds of feet above them. As his men cowered and pointed up at the sky, the king halted his army, and waited to see what would happen next.
Ítreksjóð landed at the far end of the meadow and faced the humans who had stolen his gold coin. To his surprise the Midgardians did not run away, but instead formed up behind the mounted warrior, who carried his coin, and began to march toward him. The Dragon God spewed forth a long column of flame as a warning, but still they came.
When the human warriors had come within his range Ítreksjóð took a deep breath, mixed it with the fuel in his lungs, and let out a long wide breath to incinerate the front ranks of the army that stood before him. The flames had barely left his mouth when something very hard hit him in his snout !
Thor was not about to let anyone meddle in the affairs of Midgard. Not even a Dragon God who was the son of Odin ! When Mjolnir returned to his hand Thor waited for the fire dragon to recover before warning him.
" I am God here in Midgard ! And you,.... Ítreksjóð,.... son of Odin,.... have no business here in the land that I protect ! " he shouted to the dragon across the field.
Ítreksjóð used his right front foot to wipe the blood off of his snout. When he saw the blood dripping from his claws he roared loudly, reared up on his hind legs, and angrily replied :
" I have come for what is mine. And no human, or God, is going to stop me ! " he shouted back, before allowing himself to fall back down on all fours.
Thor was about to throw his hammer again when the dragon hit the ground. The tremor it caused made him pull Mjolnir down and wait. But when the ground stopped shaking it was the Dragon God who struck first. Ítreksjóð quickly spun around and hit the Thunder God with his massive tail before he could let his hammer fly a second time.
Thor sailed through the air several hundred feet before hitting a tree with a loud thud. The Protector of Midgard was stunned for only a moment before he jumped to his feet, and with fury burning in his eyes, ran towards the dragon at full speed. In response, Ítreksjóð spewed forth a long breath of fire to stop him, but Thor held Mjolnir out in front of him like a shield to deflect the flames. A moment later the two were engaged in a battle to the death !
Odin had already left the great hall on Sleipnir moments before his two sons began their epic battle in Midgard. He had seen in his mind what was about to take place well before it began. And yet he still wondered if he would be able to reach them before one of his sons was killed. The All - Father had lost two sons already to a tragedy, and he did not want to lose any more to Loki's foolishness !
As Odin, riding hard and fast upon Sleipnirs back, emerged from Gullfoss, Frigga, who was watching the events unfolding below her from her high - seat at Hlidskjalf, whispered to herself :
" Hurry my dear ! Please Hurry !! " she told her husband.
From across the Cosmos Odin heard his wife's plea, and sunk his heels deeper into Sleipnir's sides !
