The Queen Of Pain
Freyja had been summoned by the human Brettifa, who lay sleeping on the floor at the head of the bed, and given an offering in exchange for her help. However, the Vanir Goddess had greatly underestimated the brutality of humans, and she had arrived too late to provide the assistance this poor abused woman deserved. Freyja was angry at her own failure to protect the woman, but she was absolutely furious at the Midgardian, named Kaldstein, who had battered and raped this woman.
Freyja leaned over and placed her hand on the injured woman's forehead. She removed it almost as fast as she had placed it there ! Within that short moment that her hand touched the woman's flesh, the Goddess felt the life force ebbing from the female.
" This will not happen ! " she whispered angrily to herself.
Freyja turned and faced the wall behind the bed, and cupped her hands up to the heavens. The Goddess of Seidr chanted words that only the Vanir, and Valfather, knew over and over again. Within moments swirling balls of energy began to concentrate in each of her hands. When the power that now radiated in her, and through her, reached a peak she threw the balls of energy at the wall.
Suddenly, in a great flash of light, the wall disappeared, and where it had been there now opened up a porthole into a great white sterile hall. In the middle of the hall, washing the injured leg of Modi, and Asgardian child, stood a woman dressed in the purest of white gowns.
" Must you Gods always summon me in such a fashion ! " Eir said angrily.
Freyja using her magic to keep open the porthole between the realms replied in a stern voice.
" This Midgardian woman will die if she is not cared for at once ! " Freyja explained.
Eir replied without turning to face the Goddess.
" Every day in Midgard thousands of humans die. Why does the Vanir Goddess care about this one ? " Eir asked as she bandaged the child's leg.
Freyja took a deep breath to hold her anger down and then answered the " Best of Physicians " .
" I pledged to protect this woman, and I was too late in keeping to my oath. Now she is dying ! If we as Gods do not keep to our word the Midgardians will no longer trust us, or honor us ! " she explained to the physician.
Eir did not reply.
" Will you not save this woman ? ! " Freyja asked impatiently.
Eir finished with Modi's leg, and patted him on the head. She then went over to a bowl of pure water, and washed her hands thoroughly.
" I did not say that I will not attend to this woman. I was merely curious as to why you wished her to be well. " Eir said as she dried her hands on a towel.
The physician walked over to the woman who lay on the bed. The first observation she made was that her patient was breathing in a very shallow manner. Eir gave Freyja a concerned look before continuing her examination.
" Contusions, internal bleeding, a collapsed lung, a broken rib,...., or two..., and swelling of the brain. " Eir told Freyja in a cold analytical tone.
Freyja's eyes sparkled with anger !
" Then she will die ?! " she asked.
Eir looked over at Freyja with an annoyed grimace on her face.
" If the Vanir Goddess wishes me to heal her,...., then I will make her well again. " Eir told the Goddess of magic.
Freyja tried to hold back her anger, but she could no longer contain it.
" Heal her ! And do it now !! " she shouted.
Eir nodded and walked back into the healing hall. She came back a moment later with a black bag which contained healing herbs. While Freyja patiently watched the physician mixing the herbs with liquid potions, she continued to hold open the porthole between the worlds with a power as strong as the universe itself .
Freyja was fascinated by Eir's precision and quickness as she placed some of the herbs in Birsla's mouth and then began to remove the queen's clothes. All over the woman's body Eir rubbed in a healing solution that she applied with a special type of moss. When she had finished with the healing salve, she then began to chant an ancient spell that was almost as old as the beginning of sentient life. Then to Freyja's great surprise it looked as though Eir was about to kiss the human on the mouth !
Eir placed her lips gently over Birsla's, while holding the patient's nose, and gently began to blow into her mouth. As the small breaths of magically charged air reached the queen's collapsed lung it began to slowly inflate, and work on its own once again. When the physician felt the pressure or her patient's breaths return to normal she smiled at Freyja.
" She will live. " Eir told the Goddess as if it were never in doubt.
" Thank You ! " Freyja humbly told the physician.
As Eir began to turn away Freyja reached down with one hand, and placed it over the queen's forehead, while still keeping the porthole open with the other. A spark of energy transferred itself from the Goddess into the queen's head, which began to glow.
Eir spun back around to see what Freyja was doing, and was shocked by what she saw.
" What have you done ! " the physician demanded to know.
Eir, you have given this female back her life. I, in turn, have endowed her with anger, and the strength of will to seek revenge ! " she told the physician with a wicked grin.
Eir shook her head in disbelief.
" You Vanir are a strange lot. With one hand you reach out and fertilize the land giving life where there is none. And yet, at the same time, you fold your other hand into a fist and seek revenge. " she told the Goddess of Seidr.
Freyja grabbed hold of Eir's shoulder with her free hand, and looked her in the eyes.
" You are a woman ! Would you allow that evil husband of her's to beat her to death without giving her a chance ! " Freyja blurted out sharply.
Eir smiled gently at the Vanir Goddess.
" I did not say that you were wrong to do this. Just that you Vanir are a strange lot to figure out. " Eir explained.
Eir looked down at Freyja's hand, which she slowly removed, and then the physician walked back through the porthole to her Asgardian hall. Before Freyja broke the connection between the two worlds Eir turned and spoke to Freyja one last time.
" I will return tomorrow to check on my patient, .... , but I will travel here in my own way if you do not mind. " she told Freyja.
" Thank You ! " the Vanir Goddess expressed humbly.
Eir smiled and nodded.
Freyja clapped her hands, and the porthole closed.
Before leaving Freyja dressed the queen, and kissed her on the head.
" Sweet dreams ! " Freyja told the queen with a giggle.
