The Queen Of Pain
The King Returns
( Helpless No More )
King Kaldstein was tired and angry when he returned to the guest hall in Sokndal. He had traveled all the way to the All - Thing to have a judgement rendered in his favor to stop the Hordalanders from using the Sunnfjord. Instead, his old nemesis Skorargeir, the Lagmann, had thwarted his efforts by citing laws about natural boundaries. Yes ! Kaldstein was very angry, and he liked to share his anger with others !
The king became even angrier when he learned from Unnvaldr that his wife was still alive.
" Stupid bitch doesn't even know when to die ! " he muttered under his breath.
" And where is the queen now ? " Kaldstein asked the guard.
" She has gone with Brettifa back to the market, my Lord ! " Unnvaldr told the king with a little grin.
When Vetr came back to the guest hall, after putting their horses up for the night, he found the king chugging ale out of a large horn as though it were water. As Vetr walked over to the table, Kaldstein pointed to the bench, slammed down a horn, and quickly filled it with ale.
" Sit down my old friend, and have a drink ! " the king ordered more than offered.
Vetr nodded, and sat down warily.
" Thank you, my Lord ! " his commander replied.
Kaldstein took a long drink from his horn, and then wiped his mouth on his sleeve.
" You know, I hate that bitch ! " the king stated angrily.
Vetr took a sip from his horn before replying.
" Who do you mean my Lord ? " Vetr asked.
" My wife Birsla, of course ! " he exclaimed angrily.
" It was a marriage of convenience. Simply a way to become king through alliances and allegiances. Not my type of woman at all ! Too quiet, prim and proper for my taste. I like my women loud and bawdy, ..... with a taste for the.... well.....unusual..... if you get my meaning ! " he told Vetr in one continuous rant.
Then he blurted out something that should not have surprised Vetr. But it did !
" I wish that bitch was dead ! " he offered up as though it were not an unusual thing to say.
Vetr felt that the king was waiting for him to say something. But how could anyone reply to such a horrible statement ! Finally the commander of the Royal Guard asked the king a question.
" Why don't you take a mistress, and in that way you could have the best of both worlds ? "
Kaldstein's face contorted into an angry mask. With his free hand he knocked the horn out of Vetr's hand, and then pointed to the door.
" You are as useless to me as she is ! Don't you understand ! I want that bitch DEAD !! " he screamed at Vetr.
" Now get out of my sight ! " he added with a drunken slur.
Vetr stood up and looked the king directly in the eyes.
" I have never given you reason to speak to me in such a fashion ! " Vetr replied boldly.
Kaldstein stood up and stared down his commander.
" Leave now or I will have Ragnvaldr kill you right here and now ! " the king told Vetr angrily.
Vetr, knowing that the king was capable of almost any level of evil, bowed and began to walk to the door of the hall.
" Then I will leave you to yourself ! " he said just loud enough for the king to hear.
After Vetr left Kaldstein drank until he could not hold up his head any longer, and then he stumbled over to one of the beds and collapsed onto it. It took only moments for the king to fall asleep, still fully clothed, and with his boots on.
Brettifa was horrified when they returned from shopping and found the king already asleep in one of the beds in the guest hall. Brettifa tried her best to be extremely quiet. The one thing that she did not want to do was awaken the king ! The queen, however, went about her business as though nothing had changed now that her husband had returned.
Brettifa stayed with Birsla until she had the queen ready for bed. After she had placed the blanket over Birsla, she said goodnight, and quietly headed for the door. As she lifted the creaking handle she looked over at the snoring king and almost began to cry when she considered what might happen if he woke up. Brettifa felt as though she were leaving a sheep in a wolf's lair.
King Kaldstein woke up halfway through the night, and felt the uncomfortable urge to pee. As he left his bed he did not notice that his wife had returned, and was sleeping peacefully in a bed not far from his own. He also did not notice, nor could he see, the visitor who stood over his wife .
The king returned to the hall fully awake from the cold night air. With his mind alert and his eyes beginning to focus he nodded to Unnvaldr, who he had not noticed on his way out. Unnvaldr bowed and opened the door for the king.
" Good night, my Lord ! " the guard said politely.
" Mmmm. " Was more a sound than a reply, but it was all Unnvaldr received in return for his kindness.
After closing the door against the chill he noticed the form of his wife lying in a bed on the other side of the hall from where he had been sleeping.
" Well look who finally managed to come back ! " Kaldstein shouted at his sleeping wife.
Birsla awoke to her husband's shouts and sat up in bed.
" What is the matter my dear? " she asked in a tired, but pleasant tone.
Kaldstein stomped across the room.
" You ! You are what is the matter you proper bitch ! " Kaldstein screamed.
Birsla knew what was coming next and got up out of her bed. The figure that burned with fury, but who could not be seen, also was quite sure what the king's next move would be. As Kaldstein neared Birsla, Freyja removed a large gem studded knife out of her belt and handed it magically across dimensional lines to the queen.
For the first time in her life Birsla did not fear the animal who threatened her ! She gripped the knife handle tightly as though she were holding a lover's hand, and just as her husband was about to backhand her across the face she plunged the knife deep into his chest !
Birsla saw fear in her husband's eyes. And she liked it !! The first knife wound perforated the king's heart, and made him stagger backwards against the table. In his weakened state the once docile queen pounced on the man who had raped and abused her so many countless times. Her husband tried to fend off the blows, but with a strength brought on by fury, she stabbed Kaldstein again and again until he fell barely conscious onto the floor. But revenge cannot be satisfied so easily ! She mounted her abuser, as he had done to her so many times before, and continued to stab her husband without mercy !
Each time she plunged the knife into her husband's body it released a little more of the frustration and mental anguish that she had bottled up inside of her for years. And she had a lot of frustration to release ! Birsla did not stop until she had almost cut her husband's body in two ! Then, without any emotions remaining to express, she left the knife buried inside of her husband's body, walked to the door, and opened it.
Unnvaldr was half asleep at his post when he heard the door handle click open. As he turned and bowed he was surprised to see that it was Queen Birsla.
" I have murdered my husband, and place myself in your custody. " the queen told Unnvaldr as though she were discussing the weather.
In the darkness Unnvaldr did not completely comprehend the enormity of the situation until he saw the blood dripping from the queen's hands. It was then that he noticed that the queen was covered from head to toe in blood.
" Oh..... NO ! " Unnvaldr shouted as he ran into the hall.
There, by the table, he found the mutilated body of King Kaldstein. Unnvaldr did not bother to check to see if the king was dead, for it was obvious that he was ! The guard turned and ran out of the guest hall straight to the hut where the Royal Guards were being housed. Without knocking Unnvaldr threw open the door, waking up both Vetr and Nafni.
Vetr was accustomed to being awakened at all hours of the night. As commander of the Royal Guard there were often problems that arose that only could be dealt with by him. However, nothing could have prepared Vetr for what Unnvaldr told him. Though groggy from being disturbed from a sound sleep Vetr thought quickly and concisely.
As Nafni sat up in bed Vetr asked :
" Is the queen alright ?! "
Unnvaldr shook his head affirmatively.
" Yes ! She is shaken and covered in blood but appears to be unhurt ! " he replied.
Then the guard corrected himself.
" Actually she was quite calm about the whole thing. " he added.
" Very good ! Go and wake Brettifa and have her attend to the queen ! " he ordered .
Before the guard had left Vetr shouted after him.
" Wait ! Tell no one else about what has happened . Do you both understand ? " he asked.
" Yes, commander ! " both guards yelled in unison.
As Unnvaldr left to wake up Brettifa, Nafni and Vetr dressed.
" What do you have in mind ? " Nafni asked.
" Will you follow Queen Birsla ? ! " he asked.
" Yes ! Of course, commander ! " Nafni replied.
" Then everything will be fine ! " Vetr told his loyal guard.
