The Spring Troll
Alffina wanted to run away from the ugly creature, but it had her in such a tight grip that she could not move !
" Ouch ! You are hurting me !! " Alffina shouted in a high pitched voice that echoed her terror.
To her surprise and relief the hairy misshapen hand, which was considerably larger than her head, quickly released her.
" I mean you no harm, .... but you have no right to pick my flowers ! " the creature told her in a hoarse voice.
As a tear slowly rolled out of Alffina's right eye, her mouth pouted as she replied.
" I did not know that these flowers belonged to you. " she told him apologetically.
It was then that Alffina noticed that the turf on the hill, next to where she had been picking the flowers, had been pushed outward as though it were a door. As she peered into the darkness that lay beyond she asked :
" Do you live here ? "
The odd creature seemed to be surprised by the human child's question . He sat down on the steep embankment and could not help but smile at the ignorance of someone so young.
" Yes ! Of course I do ! All Trolls live under bridges or in caves. For we do not enjoy the sunlight that emanates from the Goddess Sunna as you human beings do ! " he explained to her in a gruff but friendly voice.
The soothing tone of the creature calmed Alffina, and for the first time she began to see the " Troll " as more comical looking than a threat to her. With a little giggle she reached down and picked up the bouquet for which she had been collecting flowers for. With a smile now stretched across her face Alffina reached out her arm and offered them to the troll.
" I am sorry that I picked your flowers. Would you like to have mine ? " she asked innocently.
The Troll scrunched up it's nose, turned it's head, and sneezed so loudly that it reminded her of the noise made by a sailor when he blew his horn announcing his ship's arrival into port.
" Take those wretched things away from me ! " he told the little girl as he turned his face away in disgust.
Alffina quickly pulled the flowers away, and placed them behind her back.
" Don't you like the beautiful fragrance of flowers ? " she asked.
The Troll, rubbed his bulbous nose, and frowned deeply as he replied.
" Do you not see this huge nose in the middle of my face ? " he asked pointing to it.
" It is hard to miss ! " she quickly answered.
The troll tapped one of his misshapen fingers on the top of his nose, and then pointed another at Alffina.
" To you humans the scent of flowers is considered to be a wonderful sensation, but to a being such as myself,.... with a nose as sensitive as mine,... the pungent odor of flowers is disgusting ! " he informed the child.
Comfortable now with the Troll, Alffina sat down on the slope of the river bank across from him, and gave her new friend a big smile.
" Is that why you like these white flowers with the yellow centers ? " she asked.
Then she quickly added :
" Because they have no scent ? "
The Troll laughed for the first time.
" For such a young child you are very perceptive ! " he told her.
Then to answer her question he added :
" And yes,.... that is why I like Balder's Brow ! "
This time it was Alffina's turn to frown.
" Why is it called Balder's Brow ? " she asked.
The Troll looked upon the little girl with an astonished stare.
" Why,... because it is named after Balder,... a God,... the son of the king of the Gods named Odin ! " he explained to her.
" Our God does not have a name,.... and his son is called Jesus Christ. " she corrected the Troll.
The Troll's face became very serious. He leaned so far forward that he almost touched his huge nose against Alffina's cheek as he whispered :
" Have you never been told of the other Gods ? " he asked in an incredulous tone.
Alffina clapped her hands together and giggled happily.
" No ! Would you tell me ? Please, Please !! " she begged playfully.
The Troll shook his head in the affirmative as he stroked his scruffy beard.
" Alright ! But first we should introduce ourselves ! " he told her.
" My name is Alffina Hafrsdottir ! " the eager little girl blurted out.
Her eagerness made it impossible for Sirik to hold back a broad smile which erupted across his face.
" And my name is Sirik ! " he told the child proudly.
Sirik held out one huge finger to Alffina for her to shake.
" It is nice to meet you Alffina ! " the Troll told his new friend.
Alffina took hold of his finger with both hands and shook it gently.
" I am glad I met you too ! " she responded happily.
