Thor Angers The Beast
Jormungandr, in his simple way, decided it was best to stay on the ocean floor for the time being. It once again fed itself on small scraps of food that filtered down to the great depths from the lighted world up above. Despite its meager diet, with every passing day the great beast grew ever larger, and stronger. And with its renewed strength came confidence. Eventually the serpent began to venture up from the depths to feed on the living creatures that swam near the surface. Jormungandr slowly, although warily, settled into a steady routine in his new environment, and the fear of being attacked diminished as time went on. The great beast did, from time to time, find itself looking behind itself to see if those horrible little creatures were following it.
Then one day, as Jormungandr was slithering to the surface, it tasted blood in the water with its flickering tongue. It quickly swam over to the source of the irresistible flavor of fresh blood. When it reached the object that was gently bobbing up and down in the water the creature studied the food carefully. Jormungandr remembered this food from his days on land, but something was not quite right. The sea snake slowly circled the suspended object several times trying to make sense of what it was doing here. Finally its hunger overruled what logic it had, and Jormungandr opened its massive jaws, and chomped down hard on the large ox head.
Jormungandr began to swim off looking for more prey when suddenly, and without warning, it felt itself being yanked back the other way ! The great serpent could feel that it was being pulled up by its mouth, so the beast tried to spit the food out that it had just eaten. Jormungandr flinched in agony as it experienced a sudden sharp pain in the side of its mouth ! Then the creature felt itself being pulled up to the surface by something that was stronger than itself.
This time Jormungandr was not afraid ! The great sea monster was furious, and fought hard against the immense force that was pulling it closer and closer to the ocean's surface. The creature wriggled, and spun its body in circles, in vain trying to dislodge what had become stuck in its mouth. By the time Jormungandr was yanked out of the water, and into the fresh sea air, the beast wanted to kill whoever, or whatever, was attacking it !
At first what the serpent saw was dark and shadowy, but as the water left its eyes the form came into focus, and he recognized the creature that stood above him. This was Thor, who along with his fellow Asgardians, had taken itself, its brother Fenrir, and sister Hel, away from their father, and brought them to Asgard to stand in judgement before Odin. The beasts anger grew exponentially as it stared into the eyes of the God it hated !
Jormungandr watched as Thor lifted his hammer high over his head ready to strike, and the sea serpent became full of rage. The great snake let his fury out in a long roar, and then filled its mouth with poison to spit at its attacker. The moment had come. Kill or be killed !
A moment before Thor's hammer was about to strike, and just as Jormungandr spit out its poison, the great beast saw out of the corner of its eye another shadowy figure step forward. Then Jormungandr could feel itself falling back into the cool sea water. Just before it became submerged Jormungandr felt Thor's hammer hit his head in a glancing blow, while its poison missed its mark and fell harmlessly into the ocean.
As the great serpent swam back down to the relative safety of the ocean bottom it turned and took one last look up into the lighted water at the surface. It saw there, silhouetted against the bright sunlight, the image of Thor with both of his hands held high over his head. The hammer which he held in his right hand shot out long rods of light up into the sky . And then, from the great depth that it had already reached, and through the muting effects of the water, Jormungandr heard the unmistakable booming sound of thunder !
Jormungandr paused for only a moment before heading back down to the dark watery depths of the ocean bottom. The sea serpent was more confused than ever by this most vicious attack. The great beast had seen enough, and it wanted to see no more !
