I have for a while now wanted to honor Freyja in the same way, but have never been able to find any symbols that represent her the way that she should be honored. Several books I own tell of runic symbols that represent her, and I do have all of the runic letters in necklace form, ( most are hanging from my Yggdrasil tree ), but a runic letter on a chain does not convey her quiet beauty, or her mysterious magical ways. No matter how hard I looked I could not find a symbol that I could associate with her wonderful attributes. It just had to be perfect, or nothing, for this is for Freyja !
Recently I broke the chain that I use for my Thor's hammer, so I went on Amazon. com and typed in silver chains. About halfway down the second page I saw a beautiful little silver cat perched upon some lovely scrollwork. I was enchanted by this little cat and looked at it for quite some time. ( I even magnified it ) Then it struck me, this beautiful, regal, mysterious looking cat, was perfect. Freyja has long been associated with cats, and cats have always had somewhat of a mysterious magical quality. These felines were so respected in Egypt that they were mummified and buried along side the dead, so they could be with their human families in the afterlife. Cats are also what Freyja chooses to pull her cart, so they are obviously special to her. And I have had visions of Freyja changing into cat form, though I do not know why.
One of the biggest decisions I had to make after receiving the necklace was how to wear it. I have always seen Freyja as a filter, or a shield if you will, between Thor's quick anger, and judgement, and Odin's cautious wisdom. I guess a better way to say it is that she is the perfect balance between the two. Symbolism is so very important in our religion, and I worried about placing it above the Valknut or Hammer. However, it just looks right there. And better yet, it feels right there !
After 20 years I am finally wearing all three symbols that represent the Triad that I so love and cherish. Of course now I have one more thing to explain to our inquisitive Christian friends. Our religion is not like theirs ! It is not all laid out for us in some neat little set standard. We have to, overtime, discover what works best for us as individuals, and adapt it then to our own religious standards. Honoring beautiful and magical Freyja, in this way, is just one more small step for me in this wonderful journey !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
