A Rower's Charm : Poem 42 : Lines 197 - 216
" Wind, rock the vessel; water, row the boat,
give help to the oars, relief to the steering oar
on these broad waters, wide open seas.
Should the oars be small, the rowers feeble,
the helmsmen quite small, the ship's masters be children,
give us Ahto*, your oars, your boat, master of the water,
new oars and better, a steering oar different and stronger;
set yourself at the oars, apply yourself to rowing.
Let the wooden vessel run on, the boat with iron tholepins cut
through heavy seas, whitecapped billows. "
- The Kalevala
* Ahto : Also known as Ahti, the Finnish - Estonian God of waters ,or "King of the Waves", tutelary genius of the seas.
