We live in a world that is not dominated by common sense, compassion, self control, or ethics. We live in a world that is shaped by greed, selfishness, and the neverending quest for the almighty dollar. We cheat for it, lie for it, sometimes even kill for it ! It has the same effect on us as a drug does on an addict. Those who have the most seem to be the one's who are most addicted to it, and cause the most trouble in their quest for more of their green fix. The recent mortgage loan debacle, housing mess, and the Bernie Madoff scam are just a few examples of the absolute greed that money instills in people. In the Arab world the common people have taken to the streets in violent protests over their lifetime presidents who gather great wealth while their people go hungry, and are in need of employment. Here in America, the land of the free and the rich, our legislators are doing the same corrupt acts in search of that temptation known as wealth.
We are a country that is run by the elite rich, and their powerful companies, that hire lobbyists to make backroom deals that benefit the rich, but do little or nothing for our now struggling country. These people do not care about the environment, the welfare of our people, or our country as a whole. All they care about is money, and the power, and status, that goes along with it. This pursuit allows them to see only a very narrow view of life, like a horse with blinders on. How many poor decisions have been made because of money that changed hands behind closed doors? How many favors have been promised for a change in a vote ? How many high priced lobbyists have changed the minds of our legislators to their views, and not the view of the majority of our people. A good example of this is that it has been 47 years since the first oil crisis, in 1973, and yet we have not found major, safe, alternative sources of energy. Depending instead on countries that dislike us for our lifeblood of energy ! This continual dependency on Middle East oil has lead to us being drawn into one conflict after another to protect our interests, and has cost us billions and billions of dollars, that we cannot afford.
How many jobs have been lost here in America, because our industrial base has been allowed to leave our shores and set up overseas where they pay their workers very little, and have much less stringent pollution standards. Our people suffer while the rich executives rake in millions in new profits. How many of these companies give contributions to our politicians political campaigns ? These CEO's make millions of dollars while their American blue collar workers are denied raises, or are now unemployed. Some for months, or years !
We as a species have lost our compassion for each other. We constantly argue and fight with each other; we have little or no compassion for one another; and our ability to compromise, which our country was founded on, seems to be a distant memory. And we seem unable to live and let live ! This is not why the Gods and Goddesses gave us life, or this great world to live in. They want us, and expect us, to be good to each other, and to do what is best for all of humanity, not just a select few. They expect us to think of others above ourselves, and put our selfishness aside to reach a higher goal. Simply put, they expect us to do what is right and just ! We have lost the true meaning of community to a me, me, me, society.
I used to be an optimist and think that mankind could change, and someday reach for a higher standard of ideals. Events over the last ten years or so have changed my mind about this. Human beings are so selfish, greedy, and self - destructive that I find it hard to believe that we could ever climb out of the hole of ignorance, and indifference, we have dug for ourselves, and reach out for the sunshine of enlightenment. Though we know that many of the things we are doing are detrimental to life on Earth we continue to do them. The nuclear disaster in Japan is just the latest example.
We humans just don't seem to have the inner strength to stand up and do what is right and decent, and best for all of humanity. Like the dinosaurs, someday mankinds reign will end. Hopefully the next species that becomes dominate will have more common sense than we have shown. I wish them all the best ! For mankind it is just a matter of time. Ragnarok may be closer than we think. Only it will not be the Gods who cause this disaster but mankind's greed and selfishness that will bring down our world !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love, and Thor's protection !
