Mothers, human or divine, are the fertile plains where grows the very seed of life itself. The Gods teach and perform all sorts of magical arts, but nothing that even the great Gods can do can match the great magic that takes place at the moment when life begins. This is something much older, and much more sacred even than anything that the Gods themselves can perform. And it is an event that needs to be honored, and celebrated at least once every year. Mother's day in my opinion is the perfect time to honor not only our own mortal mothers who breathed life into each and every one of us, but also the Divine Mothers who gave us the Gods from the very beginning of time itself. Today, May 11th, 2014, we should all raise our horns in great tribute to all those who not only begin life, but also nurture and protect the life which they have brought forth through childhood, and young adulthood. In reality I do not believe that mothers ever stop " mothering ". The day before my mother passed away she was more concerned with me missing my doctor's appointment than she was with the fact that she was dying. She made me leave and keep my appointment ! ( I did get back in time to say a final goodbye before she slipped away ) But that my friends is the power of motherhood !
Frigga herself was so afraid that something would happen to her son Balder that she went around to everything, living or not, and received a pledge from each and every one of them that they would not harm her dearest son. And when Balder was killed Frigga wept uncontrollably, and then she asked if anyone would go to Niflheim to seek the release of her son. It was Hermod who stepped forward and volunteered to go for Mother Frigga. If not for Loki's treachery her son would have been freed. The maternal bond between a mother and her children is not cut with the cord, but remains intact until death. And maybe even beyond. I still feel the presence of my mother, and sometimes actually stop myself from doing something I maybe should not be doing because I feel her watching eyes.
So today May 11th, 2014, I raise my horn in great honor, and also in humble deference to all mothers. Be they Vanir or Aesir, human or Dwarf , Jotun or Alfar ,it makes no difference. Today is their day . Today is All Mother's Day !
All Hail All Mothers !
