November Story :
Aurvandil's Toe © 2015
We all know the story of how Thor fought Hrungnir in a duel and killed the giant. And we all have read how the Thunder God went to the volva Groa to have the shattered remains of Hrungnir's hone removed from his skull. The story tells us that when Thor felt that the hone fragments were moving in his head, and that they would soon be extracted, out of gratitude he told the volva that he had saved her Jotun husband Aurvandil by carrying him out of Jotunheim. To prove this point, Thor explained how Aurvandil's toe had frozen because it was hanging out of the basket he was carrying her husband in, and had to be removed. The God of Thunder, to honor the Jotun, threw the toe into the heavens where it now shines in the heavens as the morning star.
A wonderful story ! But why did Thor save a Jotun ? And why would Odin's son feel obligated to honor a being that belonged to the Jotun race that he so hated ? Find out this month in my short story, ' Aurvandil's Toe ' © 2015. Coming soon to this website !
