Blenda : Sweden's Greatest Heroine
The Future Is Made In The Past
Time has little meaning for those who establish the laws and choose the lives that the children of Odin will lead. And yet the way in which time passes, and what happens within that yet unwritten period, is all important to the three maidens known to us as the Norns. Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld, the three " Fates " of mankind, exist in ways that human beings would not perceive as living. They were never born, and therefore they will never die. In many ways they are time itself, and much in the same way that time passes, and is immediately reborn to perpetually carry on in linear fashion, they too will always exist to weave the future, watch the present, and secure the past. No story can be told to fruition without their assistance, for they are the greatest writers of all !
Urd carefully placed the tapestry onto the shelf in the storage room of history, and then quickly made her way back to the main hall. There, sitting at a golden table, Verdandi carefully inspected the images on the cloth that her sister Norn Skuld had woven over a millennium before. The Fate of the moment watched the images play out in front of her, and she carefully examined each scene to make sure that there was no deviation from what must be. As Urd came up from behind her sister she placed her hand upon Verdandi's shoulder.
" Has the moment arrived yet ? " she asked.
Too busy to look up from her work, Verdandi nodded.
" It is fast approaching. The moment to act is almost upon us. " Verdandi replied without emotion.
Without removing her eyes from the tapestry of time, Verdandi addressed her other sister.
" Skuld, have you decided what the future holds for this child ? " she inquired.
Skuld looked up from her weaving and smiled.
" Yes. The child will live. " she told Verdandi in a monotone voice.
Urd, who had seen so much misery woven into the tapestry of time, and who rarely if ever smiled, grinned ever so slightly.
" Then the lie will change everything ? " Urd asked.
Skuld quickly glanced up at her sister from her work, and looked right through Urd into the future.
" No. The truth will become part of the history. " she told her sister.
Verdandi placed the cloth on the table for a moment, and dared to look up at her sister. As the present marched by without inspection the surprised Norn asked :
" Then the dagger is real ? "
Skuld looked back down at what she had recently weaved, and then back up at Verdandi.
" Is he coming ? " she asked.
Verdandi quickly glanced back at the tapestry, and instantly saw the image Skuld was referring to.
" Yes. The Dwarve named Brokk is arriving now with the magical bejeweled weapon. " she stated as a matter of fact.
Urd looked at Verdandi first, and then over at Skuld.
" Then the timeline has already been changed. " she said softly.
Skuld put down the cloth she was weaving a short moment before their visitor arrived at their door.
Brokk, who was nervous about delivering the dagger to the Norns in the first place, nearly jumped out of his skin when the door opened before he could even knock. When he recovered from the shock he saw standing there before him a hunched over monstrous looking maiden, who looked down at him with eyes that were as black as the darkest night. When the maiden reached out her bony hand toward him without speaking the little Dwarve involuntarily recoiled.
When Brokk realized that he was not being threatened he reached into a pouch tied to his waist and pulled out a beautifully designed dagger. As he handed it to the maiden he asked nervously :
" How do I know that you will keep to your end of the bargain ! "
Skuld gave the little Dwarve a look that made the little creature cringe.
" Even now as I speak to you Brokk, the Dwarve maiden Fili is falling in love with you ! " she told the Dwarve with absolute certainty before slamming the door in his face.
As Urd picked up another tapestry that Verdandi had finished examining, she turned to Skuld.
" Who will deliver the dagger ? " she asked.
Skuld held up the bejeweled knife, and examined it closely before answering.
" I will take care of that personally. " she informed her sister.
Verdandi who rarely glanced away from her work, looked up at Skuld for a second time.
" And just how will you accomplish that feat sister ? " she asked.
Skuld placed the dagger in her belt.
" Other beings perceive us as they wish. The Gods view us as monstrous witches, but the humans think of us more as a type of Sibyl. And it is as a Seeress that the Midgardian Grimm shall see me.
