293. Grýla : The Yule Ogress
Of a frightening Giantess, who is wrinkled and very old.
Grýla is her name, and it is said she lives in mountain caves,
And naughty little boys and girls are what this evil witch craves.
It is believed that Grýla lives above the Dimmuborgir lava fields,
In a high rock cave dwelling that comforts as well as it shields.
Here she resides with her husband, Leppalúði , on a mountain side,
And with her sons, and a black Yule cat, this is where they hide.
As Yule approaches Grýla grabs her walking stick to help her with her slouch,
And travels down to the village, and gathers up naughty children in her pouch.
Then on Yule night she returns to Dimmuborgir, and fixes her family a tasty treat,
She mixes up a stew made of naughty children for her husband and sons to eat.
Now some may say this tale is told to teach the Icelandic children to be good,
And that it is meant to frighten young boys and girls to act only as they should.
But sometimes if you walk around the Dimmuborgir lava fields on Yule night,
You will swear you can smell the simmering stew as you walk in Mani's light.
