Today is a very special day for all those who have Germanic blood pumping through their veins. Today, September the 9th, is the day that we honor and celebrate the life of that greatest of Germanic warriors, Arminius, of the Cherusci tribe. Arminius, commanding his Germanic tribesmen, and other allies, stopped the Roman advance into the German lands, in 9 A.D., and helped preserve our Germanic culture and heritage. In what became known as the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, Arminius, along with his Germanic kinsmen, destroyed three entire Roman Legions, consisting of approximately 20,000 soldiers. This represented about 25 % of the entire Roman army north of the Alps. The Romans were never again able to mount any serious attacks across the Rhine River, which became the unofficial border between Rome and Germania.
On this day I set up a very special altar, and place upon it all kinds of weaponry. I have three swords, a dirk, a seax, axe, spear, and a shield. ( These are all museum quality replicas and have no edge. They can be obtained from a company called Museum Replicas Ltd. ) First I consecrate the new altar with my Thor's Hammer, and then I light 3 red candles, one for each of the Roman legions. To honor this great warrior I read aloud his great exploits against the Roman legions all those years ago. I like to read from authors from earlier periods, such as Tacitus, Cassius Dio, and Velleius Paterculus, though I do use modern texts as well. I then speak of the warrior creed, and proudly place his name, with great honor, next to those of Beowulf, Sigurd, and Hrolf Kraki. I end by toasting him many times for his great accomplishments. I use beer for the toasts, it just seems right for a Germanic warrior. While I toast him I hold one of the swords high in the air in defiance of any, and all, who challenge our history, our culture, and our religion. For make no mistake about it my friends this fight goes on to this day. I end the rite by snuffing out each one of the candles that represent the Roman Legions, one by one, just as Arminius snuffed out the 3 Roman Legions, in the Teutoberg Forest in September of 9 A.D..
Later this month, starting on September the 22nd, I will post four articles on this great warriors life and exploits. Who knows, if not for the daring of this great Germanic warrior, our culture could have been compromised, and we could all be speaking Latin instead of one of the many Germanic languages. All Hail the great savior of the Germanic people, Arminius !!!
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
