These Secular Gods exist for two main reasons. First and foremost the media is to blame for this phenomena. Whether it be a press conference, or a comment or two that leaks out of social media, every remark these Secular Gods make seem to reach epic proportions, and then the media dissects every word said and the "real" meaning behind each word. Of course this raises people like Bill O' Reilly and Glenn Beck to God - like status as they sit before the cameras and tell us what is right and wrong depending on their political or religious views. The second reason that these Secular Gods exist is because we, the general public deify these idiots. We hang on their every word on Twitter and Facebook, among others, and believe their opinions as cold hard facts without caring for the truth. The biggest example in recent years of a complete idiot becoming almost worshiped was Snooki from the Jersey Shore show. Every word she said, every stunt she pulled, and whatever trouble she got herself into was followed the way a person of religion follows the word of their God or Gods.
Now you may say that we are not honoring these people as though they were Gods, but are just " highly interested" in what these people are doing and saying. In some cases this might actually be the case, but when you begin to accept their words as the " God's honest truth " because you believe that they are somehow better, or think and act at a higher level than the general public, then they have been deified. I have a friend who loved Michael Jordan when he played basketball. He has a corner of his house where he has pictures on the wall, and a table filled with various artifacts from his championships etc., which looks curiously much like the altars I have in my house ( 13 of them ) to the Gods that I honor. I am not picking on Michael Jordan, but I am using this simply as an example of someone worshiping a sports figure. Michael Jordan has always been a low key respectful person in the media.
This craze to make Secular Gods does not seem to be slowing either. Every day I hear a new actor or actress giving their holy opinion on a subject that they have no business commenting on. Of course they have the right to have an opinion, we all do, but once these " stars " speak to the cameras that follow them around all day those words are given more weight and credence by the very position that they have been given by their fans and the media. If you or I made a profound political or social statement lets be honest, no one would listen. But when Angeline Jolie or Tom Cruise make some idiotic comment the whole world hears it and half of the people listening say to themselves, " Well, maybe he is right ! " It makes me wonder sometimes how many truly brilliant " regular " people out there are ignored, and their ideas shunned because they are " nobody's in a somebody world " !
We really have no one to blame for this phenomena of Secular Gods. We read about them, watch them on television, and follow them religiously on social media. It is we the general public who have raised them up, and placed them behind an altar of our own making. Therefore it is hard to totally blame the Secular Gods for their new positions. Unfortunately once behind these altars most of them fall flat on their faces, and make complete fools out of themselves......... and yet we still follow them !
