I am going to try to go into the theater with as few preconceptions as is humanly possible, but I have seen the trailers for Thor and have seen how much it differs from our beloved Eddas. The Eddas have such wonderful and powerful stories about Thor's travels. Why not use them ? But I digress. Getting back to my preconceptions, it is hard for me to accept the blonde Aryan Thor that marvel presents to us in his fancy "get up" of a costume. It is also hard to accept that Odin would ever take away Thor's hammer, and his powers, when he let Loki get away with so much ! Especially if it is like the comic book version, which showed Thor losing his powers because of his love of Midgardians ! Odin loves us just as much, and had Thor with Mother Earth,Jord, to be our protector. And finally to see Thor in this weakened condition angers me to no end. So as you can see the putting aside of my preconceptions is not going to be easy !
One of the things I will look for closely in the film is our sense of morality and values versus Christian ones. I hope there is a high degree of honor involved in everthing Thor does, because if there isn't I will be sorely disappointed. The one thing that Marvel does do, usually, is have a good moral overtone in their films. You know, the old good versus evil morality play.
So sometime this weekend you will find me in a theater near my home. In one hand I will have a five dollar soda, in the other a six dollar bucket of popcorn, and hopefully throughout the entire two hour movie I will be able to keep my composure and not walk out. Wish me luck. I am going to need it !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
