Though Their efforts are valiant the Great Gods and Goddesses of Asgard will be almost wiped out. Thor, Odin, Freyja,Tyr, Freyr,
Heimdall etc..., will heroically battle the creatures of Chaos but to no avail. We are told that the nine worlds will be destroyed in both Voluspa, and Gylfagginning. It is Their children, lead by Balder, who rebuild Their Asgardian homeland paradise and protect a rebuilding Midgard. In Midgard we are told that two humans, Lif and Lifthrasir, will hide during the Fimbulvetr, ( Mighty Winter), and will survive Ragnarok to re-populate the world.
Of the forces of Chaos only Surtr seems to have survived the great final battle. This was, of course, due to Freyr giving away his famous sword that fought by itself. Does Surtr continue to harass the Aesir or does he sink back down into obscurity after Ragnarok ? The Eddas give us no answer to this question.
And what of the Goddesses !? The Eddas tell us nothing of their fate. My conclusion, which of course is not backed up by any written records, is that the warrior Goddesses were probably killed. These would include: Skadi, Gerd, Freyja and Sif. Frigga and her "handmaiden" Goddesses I believe would have survived. Nanna, Balder's wife, would as he did, return from Niflheim, as the Queen of Asgard. Also the daughters of both Sif and Freyja, Thrud, Gersemi and Hnoss would survive the great cataclysm.
As an Independent Asatruar I believe that anyone in our religion can honor any of the Gods and Goddesses, in a respectful manner, that they wish, including Loki. It does befuddle me somewhat when some honor the forces of Chaos ! I personally wonder why anyone would want to reach out to the powers of Chaos and destruction. Can't they find enough evil and pain here in this world? I could never choose Fenrir over Odin, The Midgard Serpent over Thor, Surt over Freyr, or the dark forces of Hel over the shining heroic Einherjar. But that is my choice ! I do wonder, however, how they will be judged when they come before the Gods sitting in their high seats? But we all must be prepared for the consequences of our choices, be they right or wrong. That is why the Gods and Goddesses gave us free will !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
