The Angry Landvaettir
Over the days that followed the Landvaettir became angrier and angrier as he was forced to witness these humans replacing his beautiful grass, which he had worked very hard to grow in Iceland' s harsh climate, with a black hard surface on which he could not make anything grow. These humans were also moving around rocks and boulders that had been carefully placed by him over the millennium, and were putting in their place tables made out of wood, with round metallic baskets by each one. The Landvaettir tried to scare away these humans from his land several times, but they would not leave. He even made the metal creatures ill by removing their innards, but the humans fixed them, and continued to change the beautiful landscape that he so loved. One day, out of sheer desperation, the Landvaettir made a small boulder roll and almost hit one of the humans. This slowed the human's progress, and he did hear them speak of the land being cursed by one of his kind, but unfortunately it did not stop them.
After a while the great mechanical beasts went away, and the little Wight was left alone in his now damaged realm. He was greatly saddened, and angered, because despite his best efforts he could not reverse the damage these humans had done to his land. To make matters worse from time to time a different type of metal monster would come and stop on the black surface. Humans would pour out of the great beast, and would sit at the tables overlooking the peaceful stream that he so loved. There they would make loud annoying noises ! They would trample his grass !! They would pick his flowers !!! And worst of all, sometimes they would leave their refuse lying all over his land !!!! The little Landvaettir was becoming very, very annoyed with these humans !
Then one day a huge metal monster, with great black eyes, stopped on the black surface. When it opened its mouth the Landvaettir was absolutely horrified by the amount of humans that came pouring out . As he sat there, invisible to these new intruders, he counted forty six of these horrible humans as they came slithering out of the belly of the great beast ! They made such a racket that the little Landvaettir placed his hands over his ears, and he hid himself behind a rock until they were gone. When he emerged from his hiding place he was horrified by the mess they had left behind ! " The next human who comes to my land is going to pay a steep price for their indiscretions ! " the Landvaettir shouted to the wind.
The little Landvaettir did not have to wait long for the next intruder to come. A small female human came the next morning on a tiny metal horse, and walked down to the edge of the stream. He decided that he would make her his first victim. He told himself that he would not hurt the little human, but he was going to give her the scare of her life ! She would never come back, and that would be one less human to spoil his wonderful land !
