When I think of the Volsungs, my thoughts automatically turn to the greatest of that ancestral line of Kings, Sigurd, the great dragonslayer. However, the Volsungs had many great kings among their generations, who were just as brave and heroic as the great Sigurd. It is just as important to know, and understand these Volsungs, and their legacy, as it is to know, and appreciate Sigurd. Over the next few weeks I will recount the tales and adventures of all the Volsung line, to honor these great men and women for what they mean to our religion, and our heritage.
When I think of honor, bravery, and the warrior spirit, I think of three great men: Beowulf, Hrolf Kraki, and of course Sigurd, The Dragonslayer. These men are the very embodiment of the warrior class, and spirit, that existed before the time of Christ, that eventually destroyed this warrior ethic forever. They lived in a world of almost constant warring, where it was hard to trust anyone. A world where only the strongest survived to plant the seeds of future generations. These were, and are, our greatest heroes !
That is why I am going to spend the entire rest of the month of July writing about the Volsungs. I cannot believe how little I have read on internet blogs about our greatest heroes. Bloggers seem to be stuck on our Gods and Goddesses, and ancestors, and seem to forget about our great heroes. They deserve to be remembered, discussed, and honored just as much as the other two divisions listed above, and I will do my best to bring them to light.
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
