Yule is an especially difficult time for me as an Asatruar. I am constantly torn between my ancestral heritage, and the way they celebrated Yule, and my Asatru faith with its rituals. I walk a tightrope every year between tradition and faith, trying not to fall too far one way or the other in a strange balancing act. Yule is celebrated over 12 days in most Scandinavian countries, ( except in Norway where it is 13 ), and has been heavily influenced by Christianity. Hence my dilemma !
Dark Day, ( December 25th ), is when I mourn the deaths of all those Heathens who were persecuted, tortured, and killed by the Christians over 100's of years throughout Europe and Scandinavia. I also mourn the deaths of our great martyrs as well, and curse the birth of that child whose existence has caused so much pain and anguish to all non - Christians. Though I am sure that was not his intention, that IS the way it turned out ! That day, December the 25th, marked the beginning of the end of most of the old religions throughout Europe and Scandinavia. Truly a day of sorrow for all Heathens world - wide.
So light your candles, fill your horns, and join together with family, friends, and like folk, because here it is, December, the busiest Asatru month !
Next Article : A special Scandinavian / Germanic Cultural History article. I will give you a little hint. Freyja likes me to add women to the mix whenever I write my articles, but when I looked at all my subjects for our cultural heritage I could not think of a woman to add right away. Then it came to me.... a Scandinavian woman who gained world - wide fame in the 1920's through the 1940's. She is now considered a legend ! I will let you think about that one. See you then !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love, and Thor's protection !
