After about fifteen minutes we hit an air pocket, or what ever makes a plane shake, so I looked up from my book. The daughter quickly looked away but the mother took the opportunity to ask what I was reading. I told her I was reading the Eddas. She then asked what language it was written in, and I replied English. She then made a comment about it not being in English, so I more specifically said in English using ancient runic letters. Then she asked why I had written it this way. I told her I belonged to the religion known as the Asatru, a pagan religion, and wrote it in runic to honor great Odin.
Her daughter said, " cool " but her mother looked very uncomfortable. To try to alleviate her uneasiness I went into a speech about our love for our Gods, and that we do not worship the devil and were of course not Neo - Nazis. I even briefly described the Eddas and some of our rituals. Slowly I saw her anxiety disappear and she seemed much more relaxed. As I started to say more I realized that people in the surrounding seats were leaning in to eavesdrop. Now I felt a little uncomfortable ! Especially when the daughter asked if I were a priest or something. I told her no with a nervous chuckle. So she asked, " what was I then".
At first I had no answer. Then I replied, " I am what the Gods have made me".
After a while the conversation died out, but just before we landed she handed me a paper and pen to write down the names of the Eddas that I had described to her, which I gladly did. The mother and daughter even said goodbye a second time at the luggage carousel. I was very happy ! It was the perfect ending to the perfect vacation !
Go with Odin' s wisdom Freyja' s love and Thor' s protection !
