I also wonder if the Gods and Goddesses actually have spoken to individuals who try to investigate, and explain our religion as though it were some cold case that has been lying around for thousands of years and needs to be solved. The Gods have spoken to me, and I have seen them in dreams, and have felt their presence many times. For me that is more than enough knowledge, and I want to learn from Them, and not from some Midgardian who is trying to describe what to me is almost incomprehensible. This is not a science project, or the unlocking of the Mayan writing system, or the finding of a new tomb in the Valley of the Kings. These are Gods and Goddesses who are once again reaching out to their children, ( us ), and trying to have a relationship with them.
I believe it is a waste of time trying to understand the Gods at some deeper level. Whether the Gods live in another dimension, live in spirit form only, or live as they have come down to us in the Eddas and Sagas is of no concern to me. The fact that they exist, and have shown me, ( someone who hates religion ), that they exist, is what has touched me deep within, and awoken something ancient inside of me that has given me the strength to have faith in something other than myself. Does it matter if Loki is the blood brother of Odin, or the cunning an evil trickster of the Eddas ? I don't think so ! If Loki is the one who comes to you and gives you his strength, knowledge, and wisdom, then simply accept it, and honor him for the gifts he gives you. Some people see Hel as one of the evil offspring of Loki, but that is not how she has shown herself to me. I see her as a tragic figure who has been given a mighty task, one that would overwhelm most others.
Some people see Balder as a gallant warrior, almost like a medieval knight. And yet at times he comes to me as a bright light shining out of the darkness. He has no form in this light, and yet I feel him inside of that light as a soothing entity that cools my anger, and relieves my pain. Actually most of the Gods I sense, or feel, before hearing or seeing them. I sense Thor's elemental might, feel Freyja's intense love, and feel a sense of wariness when Odin comes. Frigga feels like a ...... hug, and Skadhi gives me that same feeling that you get when you are about to see and old friend for the first time in years. Sorry, but that is the best way I can describe them.
To know the Gods and Gods better we don't need to analyze them to nauseum, or compare them to other ancient Gods and Goddesses. You will not get to know the Gods better from reading books by Krasskova, Paxson, or Gundarsson, nor will the Gods be more honored in your doing so. Don't get me wrong, these authors are very intelligent, and one in particular I believe is brilliant in her field, but they all in my opinion miss the point. Our ancestors had no books. Actually they hardly had a written language. What they did have, however, is a personal relationship with the Gods and Goddesses that most of us have lost. And you cannot get it from books !
No book, no You Tube video, and no scientific analysis of our Gods, Goddesses, and their worlds, will bring you any closer to our Gods. Only if you call them with both you heart and mind wide open, and vulnerable, will you truly be touched by them and maybe, just maybe, gain a small understanding of what they are. I mean enough already with all the books, lectures and arguments about what they are, and what they are not. It doesn ' t matter ! What does matter is that you build a personal relationship with the God, or Gods, that have touched you, and feel their presence, and learn from what they have to teach . It is such an incredible experience !
P. S. Remember, if you are with a God they have come to you, and want to hear what you have to say. You cannot honor the Gods and Goddesses with someone elses words ! They want to hear what is in your thoughts and your heart, not what you have been told to say on the pages of some book !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love, and Thor's protection !
