Normally when I go up to the nursing home to see him I am very depressed, and I know that he can see it on my face. The sounds, and smells, of a nursing home will wipe the smile off of most people. And his nursing home is actually a very nice one ! This year however, I am going to go up to see him on Father's Day with a different attitude. I am going to remember and honor him for both the man he once was, and the man that he still is. For behind those cloudy eyes still resides the great man that my father once was. His outward appearance does not tell the whole story of his honorable and hardworking life !
Instead of seeing his wrinkled face, I will remember his work hardened features. I will look past his shattered body and see the strong man who worked two jobs his entire life to support his wife and two children. I will listen to his broken and mumbled speech, but remember his firm but gentle voice that taught me right from wrong. I will ignore his paralysis and see the energetic man who was always painting, mowing the lawn, or fixing something. But most of all I will look into his eyes and remember the many memories that we shared together.
To all the great fathers, alive and passed, I say Happy Father's Day ! And to my father, on his special day, I will simply tell him Thank You, and that I love him !
Go with Odin's wisdom, Freyja's love and Thor's protection !
