My solution was a simple one. I took the two sets of rune stones and spelled out the names for Thor, Odin and Freyja and placed candles on both sides. Thinking about it now brings a smile to my face, but at the time it was the best I could do. So I fumbled through my first rite and hoped the Gods and Goddesses would understand that it was done with the best of intentions and with love. Even though it was not elaborate I think they were satisfied with my first effort.
To help out newcomers to our religion I would like to mention a few companies who have statuary of our Gods and Goddesses that may help you to build your first altar. The first is Sacred Source. They have images and statues of Thor, Odin, Freyja, Tyr, Freyr, Loki and a valkyrie. They also have some wall plaques of the various Gods.
Another company is Museum Replicas Limited. They currently have very nice statues of Thor and Loki. They also have swords, shields, clothing, helmets, axes, knives, jewelry, and drinking horns all based on the Viking era and all modeled after museum pieces.
I hope this helps those who are just getting started. I know I wish that I had this information before I built my first altar. And don't forget a bag or two of rune stones.....you can pick them up just about anywhere!
