( Gna's Glory )
Frigga, like many of the Asgardians who would not be going to Gymir's hall for the celebration, promised to send gifts to the happy couple to honor their great love. All - Mother had traveled to Svartalfaheim and had chosen their anniversary gifts very carefully, and she was certain that Freyr and Gerd would enjoy their presents.
For Freyr she had the Dwarves make a beautiful sword to replace the one he had to relinquish to entice Gerd to marry him. Although this new weapon did not magically fight on its own, as did the one he had given away, it had a strongly forged blade and an ornately decorated hilt. The sword came with a pure gold scabbard that was engraved with wonderful serpent designs along its entire length.
Gerd's gift was also a finely crafted piece that Frigga had commissioned the Dwarves to make. After describing Gerd's wonderful attributes to the little craftsmen they had come up with the idea for a brooch in the shape of a circle, with golden rays coming out from the center. Each ray was tipped with a special gemstone which when light penetrated its surface the stone would glow. In the center of the piece was a red gemstone from Muspelheim that looked much like a ruby. When light shone on this " fire " stone, however, it was bounced back and forth within the gemstone making it seem like a flickering flame.
Frigga was about to summon Hermod to her great hall to deliver the couple's gifts when she remembered that he had been sent to Ljosalfheimr to give the Lord of the Elves a congratulatory message on his recent victory over a Jotun army that had tried to invade his realm. Frigga shook her head back and forth in disgust.
" Those evil Jotuns are always looking for more living space ! " she whispered to herself.
Not having Hermod available was of little matter, however, to the Queen of Asgard. Frigga had used Fulla on several occasions to deliver messages for her in the past. One time in particular All - Mother sent her handmaiden on a rather dangerous journey to see King Geirrod to warn him of a wizard who would soon be in his midst. Frigga smiled when she recalled that this was done over a wager she had made with Odin over which of King Hunding's sons, King Geirrod, or Agnar, would rule the Goths. Frigga had lost the bet, and Agnar ruled, but her handmaiden had done her duty and warned Geirrod. The king simply did not heed her warning . " Yes ! Fulla was an acceptable substitute for Hermod as a messenger ! " Frigga told herself.
Lying next to her high - seat Frigga had a large shield which was decorated for show, and not for battle. All - Mother lifted the small shield with one hand, and pulled a small golden mallet out of her belt pouch, which she banged against the shield. The resulting sound reverberated throughout her great hall, and out into the courtyard as well.
By the time Frigga had set the shield back down, and placed the mallet back in her pouch, she heard the front doors to her hall open. All - Mother watched as Fulla entered the hall with a stride that was both feminine, and yet purposeful. The handmaiden soon stood before Frigga with her free flowing hair reaching almost to her feet, and knelt down in front of the Queen of Asgard.
Frigga was pleased to see that Fulla was wearing the beautiful gold headband that she had given to her handmaiden as a gift. Although All - Mother would never admit to anyone that Fulla was her favorite, she could not lie to herself. From that time long ago when they both had chanted together to heal Balder's horse, which had injured its leg, she had felt a special kinship with Fulla. She thought of her more as a sister than a handmaiden.
Fulla looked up at Frigga and smiled.
" Do you require my assistance All - Mother ? " the handmaiden asked pleasantly.
" Yes, my dear ! I would like you to travel to Gymir's hall in Jotunheim and deliver to Freyr and Gerd these anniversary gifts. " Frigga explained as she pointed to the presents that lay on a couch next to the high - seat.
Fulla rose up and studied the gifts for a moment before commenting.
" They are exquisite ! " she exclaimed with a look of astonishment on her face.
" But then again you have always had a wonderful talent for choosing presents Mother Frigga ! " Fulla told her with a huge smile, as she proudly adjusted her headband.
Frigga joined her handmaiden at the couch. She returned Fulla's smile as she reached out and held her hands.
" It is easy to choose gifts for those you care the most for ! " All - Mother replied happily.
Fulla blushed at Frigga's words.
" You are too kind All - Mother ! " Fulla replied with a slight bow.
Frigga gave out a little laugh before adding :
" If you like my dear you may take Lettfeti with you on your journey to Jotunheim. I know that he is your favorite horse ! " she told Fulla as she squeezed her hands.
" Thank you All - Mother ! " Fulla shouted joyfully.
Frigga released her handmaiden's hands, and stroked her hair.
" Now go child ! Your journey will be a long one, and it is important that my gifts reach Gymir's hall in time for the happy couple's celebration ! " she told her handmaiden as she pointed towards the doors.
