( Gna's Glory )
Frigga uncharacteristically threw open the doors of Odin' s great hall, and strode quickly over to her husband, who was seated regally upon his high - seat. Hermod, as always, stood by his lord's side. As Frigga approached, the messenger nodded to All - Mother, but received no affirmation for his polite gesture.
" Fulla has been badly injured in my service ! " she told her husband bluntly.
Odin was certain something was wrong when his wife entered the hall so abruptly, but he did not expect to hear that an Asgardian, and one of her handmaidens at that, had been injured. Odin leaned forward in his high - seat, and with a look of great concern on his face spoke.
" Quickly my wife ! Tell me what has happened to your handmaiden ! " he demanded.
Frigga reached out and grabbed her husband's hand.
" I sent Fulla to Gymir's hall in Jotunheim with presents for Freyr and Gerd,..... for their first wedding anniversary celebration,..... and she was brutally attacked and left for dead by a Jotun ! " she explained angrily.
Odin's eye opened wide in disbelief.
" Will Fulla survive her injuries ? " Odin asked.
Frigga's eyes welled up with tears as she lowered her head before responding.
" Fulla was able to mount Lettfeti and make her way back to the Rainbow Bridge where Heimdall, alert as always, rushed her to my hall. Eir has examined her, and in her esteemed estimation Fulla will recover from her injuries over time. " she told her husband through trembling lips.
Then Frigga allowed herself to do something that she did not dare let herself do in front of her handmaidens. She broke down in tears.
" This is all my fault ! How can I make this right ! ? " she asked her husband as she fell to her knees.
Odin turned to Hermod, and with tight lips, and a bitter tone ordered him to find Thor.
" Search both Midgard and Jotunheim ! Find Thor and bring him here as quickly as possible ! " he commanded his grerat messenger.
Hermod nodded respectfully, and then ran out of the hall as quickly as his legs would carry him.
After Hermod had left Odin knelt down and placed his arm around his tearful wife. Then, suddenly, the door to Valhalla flew open and a large shadow stood in the light of the open doors. When Vidar saw the All- Mother on her knees being comforted by his father he ran to their side.
" What has happened ? ! " he shouted.
Odin kissed Frigga on the forehead and then looked up at his son.
" Fulla has been badly injured by a Jotun. " he calmly told Vidar.
Vidar frowned when he heard his father's words.
" Why was a handmaiden traveling in Jotunheim ? Was she alone ? ! " Vidar asked.
Frigga looked over her shoulder at her step - son and began to cry harder.
" Yes ! This is my fault ! I sent one of my handmaidens into a dangerous land all by herself ! " she explained as she wept.
Odin stroked his wife's hair as he tried to quiet her down.
" This is not your fault. You have been in need of a warrior messenger for some time now. You used the best person you had available to you to perform the task at hand. But now it is time to rectify this shortfall on your staff ! " he told his wife.
" Father ! " Vidar said abruptly. " Would not one of your brave Valkyries make a wonderful messenger for Frigga ? " he asked.
Odin thought for a moment, and then shook his head negatively.
" That is a fine idea Vidar, but I have too few Valkyries as it is. The Midgardians make war as though it were a game ! They fill my hall more and more with their honored dead. So many in fact that I have had to share the Einherjar with Freyja. I now keep only half of the honored dead, the other half stay at Folkvangr with the Vanir Goddess. " he replied while in deep thought.
" Cannot Hermod split duties between you and All - Mother ? " Vidar asked.
" Poor Hermod has more than enough to do here in my great hall ! " he told his son. " Besides it would not be appropriate for a male messenger to spend his days in a hall of maidens. " he added.
Vidar looked at his father with a puzzled look upon his face.
" Then what is the answer father ? " he asked.
Odin stood up and helped Frigga to her feet. With a gentleness that would not be expected from such a large being he carefully wiped away his wife's tears.
" We will hold a competition between all the handmaidens here in Asgard to see which will make the best warrior messenger to stand by your side ! " he told his wife with a little smile.
Odin then glanced back at Vidar.
" Take your step - mother back to Fensalir, and then go to Thrymheim and ask Skadhi to come to my hall ! " he commanded Vidar.
Odin kissed his wife on both cheeks and gently poked her nose with his finger.
" And you my wife are to go back to your hall and see to Fulla. " he told her. " Come back tomorrow and we will discuss in greater detail the plans for the competition. " he told her.
Frigga nodded and began to walk away. Vidar placed his arm around his step - mother as he joined her heading towards the doors. Before he left Vidar shouted over his shoulder to his father.
" Why Skadhi father ? " he asked.
" Who in the nine worlds is a better female warrior than the great mountain Goddess ! ? " he replied.
Vidar gave Frigga a small hug as they reached the golden doors.
" Father's wisdom truly is wonderful ! " Vidar told her.
Frigga smiled for the first time that day.
" Why do you think I married him ? " she replied.
